My Final Word: the Left is losing & 2026 could be too late
This week, Martyn gives it to the Left straight: the final TVNZ poll of 2025 is a body blow — and if the current trajectory continues, a second term of hard-right rule will gut the state beyond repair.
From Te Pāti Māori’s internal fallout to Labour’s cautious centrism and the Greens’ struggle to mobilise under-40s, the Left is fragmented while the Right ram legislation through unchecked, fuel hate mobs, and strangle the common good.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. If they win again in 2026, the system might not survive the damage.
I guess nobody wants to know this. Tough t..s. We moaned and evidenced but the doctors stood around the bed and cupped us as usual which seems to have meant, bled us. But that was convention and the accepted way by all their peers, and who was going to gainsay it.
I have the theory that Brit Royalty early on embraced homeopathy which cut into the solemn purity of medical convention and enabled a little diluted medicine in, just to aid natural recovery. Perhaps we could stop this nation’s drug dependence; that is selling citizenship and visas with extras; the govt isn’t’ supposed to be in retail.
As a business it seems to be a failure, definitely not a high flier. Perhaps we could take it back and run it under a Citizens Commission.?
We’re talking about political parties on the left here and they have never achieved anything without a large popular movement behind them. The only question worth asking these days is; are you contributing to growing this kind of movement?
In the US Bernie Sanders is touring non stop, holding rallies and meeting Trump supporters to win them over. In this country Labour is terrified of this sort of thing, Te Pati Maori have taken their eye off the ball and the Green’s, despite Chloe leading, don’t seem like they can make this happen. Maybe things haven’t got bad enough yet but I can’t see any signs of a popular movement anywhere in this country
Political Parties on the left have never achieved much without a popular movement behind them – so the only question worth asking anyone is; what are you doing to contribute to such a movement.

In this country the Labour MP is terrified of people power and have actively squashed it in their party, Te Pati Maori have dropped the ball and the Green’s, despite, Chloe’s leadership seem unlikely to build a popular movement. Maybe things haven’t got bad enough here yet because I just don’t see signs of this anywhere
