A homicide investigation is underway after an inmate died 10 days after allegedly being assaulted by his cellmate at Mt Eden prison.

The man’s death is the third homicide investigation involving inmates in double-bunk cells at the prison since September last year.

The death comes amid a Corrections review of a risk assessment tool used in deciding whether prisoners are suitable to share a cell, after the two earlier suspected murders.

Double bunked violent, overcrowded prisons make rehabilitation far less likely creating nothing but a time bomb of men released more broken and damaged than when they went in.

If safety for the community and justice for victims is to mean anything, it requires a prison system that rehabilitates rather than punishes via suffering.

The loss of liberty is the punishment, making prisoners suffer beyond that is just a revenge fantasy masquerading as social policy.

Let’s not forget the brutal prison rapes because of our disgusting double bunk policy in this country…

Prison rapist Benjamin Goundar sentenced for sexually abusing cellmate

The victim of the current offending said Goundar raped him or forced him to perform oral sex nearly every night from mid October 2017 to early January 2018.

He made death threats to dissuade the victim from moving to a different cell, and on one occasion pulled a shank on him.

The abuse only stopped when an anonymous call was made to Crimestoppers, and Goundar was moved out of the unit.

…which follows another sickening story of brutal prison rape because of our disgusting double bunk policy in this country…

A convicted rapist was able to prey on fellow prisoners after an alert banning him from sharing a cell was turned off by staff.

William Katipa, 52, raped three men while in prison in New Zealand. Two of the men were in their 20s, one was a teenager.

…the damaged manner in which the NZ population has been conditioned by mainstream media and vile politicians singing tough on crime rhetoric has created so many counter productive outcomes in our prison system that we are now the problem…

Luxon calls growing prisoner numbers ‘a good thing’ as police target slips

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has declared the soaring prison population to be a “good thing”, characterising it as the price of restoring law and order

He also conceded the government was running behind on its promise to boost police numbers by 500, despite previously insisting the target would be met by next week.

Facing reporters at Parliament on Tuesday, Luxon was questioned about the prison muster, which has surged to record highs and is now nearing 11,000 inmates.

“Absolutely, that’s a good thing,” he said. “Yep, good thing.”

Luxon said the coalition would not ease up on criminals or adjust policy simply because the costs were rising.

“I understand… the financial implication of… restoring law and order in New Zealand, but we make no apologies about that,” he said.

“The cost will be what the cost will be.”

Luxon doesn’t give a fuck about the cost and he doesn’t give a fuck about the ongoing cost.

His basic bitch rational is ‘lock them up and throw away the key’.

Media sell crime clickbait porn to the masses.

Young Māori and Pacifica abuse and attack exploited Chinese and Indian workers in sweat shop dairies and bottle shops while the white middle classes clutch their pearls in the suburbs and scream, ‘something must be done’ and Luxon is there to do the doing.

We don’t care that damaged men go into under resourced, corrupt and violent prisons and come out as monsters to commit worse crimes, we just don’t care.

And neither does Luxon. He will gladly lock anyone up for anything if it makes you feel the illusion of safety.

We banned gang patches, but gang crime is through the roof.

The illusion of safety is the perfect handmaiden to the clickbait of crime fear.

Our prisons dehumanise and damage men who are already dehumanised and damaged. They then put them out with fuck all support and we look confused when they cause more terrible crime.

We are a low horizon imagination people fixated on cow udders, undiagnosed alcoholism and a domestic violence rate that is civil war level. We hate anyone smarter than us, despise intellectualism and have our petty bigotries manipulated by the right with an ease and fission  that is almost sexual.

The majority want prisoners to not only have their liberty taken from them, but we want to make them suffer as well.

There is a large chunk who want to see prisoners chained together in orange jumpsuits breaking rocks while singing ‘Old Man River”.

That is who we is.

That is what we have become.

A nation of gauche hatreds and petty malice, ruddy faced with fury and confusion, wearing cow shit splattered slippers and banjo twanging cultural insulation.
