Minister for Women Nicola Grigg must resign after Government declare war on working women

Labour, Greens say minister for women should quit over her pay equity response

Labour deputy leader Carmel Sepuloni says Nicola Grigg should resign as the minister for momen after she claimed changes to the Equal Pay Act was “positive news for women”.

Sepuloni criticised Grigg for being ineffective and on the wrong side of public opinion, as the Government faced further heat in the debating chamber about its surprise changes to the legislation.

Labour has alleged the change is being rushed through Parliament because the Government needs to quickly find cash ahead of the Budget on May 22. ACT leader David Seymour said this change was saving taxpayers “billions”.

That money is being saved because the Government expects fewer works will succeed in claiming they are being underpaid because of gender-based discrimination. 

“Women are paying the cost for tax cuts that were unaffordable, for tax breaks for landlords, for tax breaks to the tobacco industry,” Sepuloni said.

Green co-leader Marma Davidson also called for Grigg to go.

But Grigg, under questioning from Labour on Wednesday, said women should celebrate changes to the Equal Pay Act. She said the changes would make the system simpler for making pay equity claims.

Sepuloni said Grigg was alone in thinking that.

“It’s her against every other woman in this country. She should stand down. Every woman in the coalition Government should hang their head in shame,” the Labour deputy leader said.

Women should celebrate losing all their hard work towards pay parity and be grateful National are spending that instead on tobacco subsides, more military and  tax loop holes for the wealthy?

What planet does Grigg live on?

Nicola Grigg was always a hopeless Minister at the best of times, that she has allowed this vicious declaration of war against women workers to occur and not had the decency to resign herself marks her out as an accomplice to this action, and every working women should really hate her for screwing them over!

This anti-Treaty, anti-Māori, anti-Renter, anti-environment, anti-worker, anti-beneficiary and anti-disabled Government have just added, anti-woman’ to that list.

This is the hateful right wing Government you elected folks.

This is on all of us.

We have become a nation of people willing to cut our own throats for the benefit of corporate interests and pretend that’s what a democracy is.

How bitter must this country be at Jacinda for having the temerity of saving us during a once in a century Pandemic to think this anti-Treaty, anti-Māori, anti-Renter, anti-environment, anti-worker, anti-beneficiary, anti-disabled and anti-woman Government is preferable.
