How desperate must Minister Chhour to be to mislead the country on children being abused in State care?
Children’s Minister accepts state care harm statistics didn’t provide full picture
Children’s Minister Karen Chhour has acknowledged her initial celebration of a reduction of harm in state care residences did not provide the full picture.
The government this week was celebrating the first recorded drop in harm in Youth Justice and Care and Protection facilities.
However, that is just one of four categories tracked by Oranga Tamariki, and the statement out on Wednesday included no mention of a 4 percent increase in recorded harm across the wider state care system.
The Children’s Commissioner and the Independent Children’s Monitor within hours had released their own statement urging a more considered assessment.
They welcomed the decrease of harm in government facilities, but noted that was just three fewer children harmed – dropping from 118 in 2024 to 115 this year. The Oranga Tamariki report the data comes from further reveals reported harm in those facilities is up from just 22 in 2021.
Children’s Commissioner Claire Achmad told RNZ it was unacceptable to see overall harm in state care had increased – with 530 reports of children harmed over the last 12 months.
“And actually there has been a higher number of findings of harm in care as well, 896 … what that tells us is that for some of these children, in fact around 21 percent, they have actually experienced multiple incidences of harm.
“We are talking about really serious harm, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and neglect.”
…so the Minister, who has weaponised her trauma against the State more than anyone else in NZ history, was attempting to pretend 3 less children hurt in Government facilities while abuse jumped up everywhere else was a celebration was it?
All ACT are capable of are frenetic culture war fission while amputating every state service they can get their hands on, for the Minister to pretend this was a victory, only to get busted by everyone else in the sector, is a humiliation that should see Minister Chhour reaching for the tissues.
If only she could look after children in state care with as much ease as she cry’s.

Chour got a ‘patsy’ question in the House this week (from another ACT MP) to skite about the ‘reduction. Half-truths (actually quarter truths in this instance), misinformation, disinformation from ACT. Par for the course.
When will A/NZ wake up to this deceit?

Now if a Labour MP did the same thing at Chhour and so many other MPs in this coalition National, ACT and NZ First would be demanding on a daily basis for that MP to resign or be sacked. The media would be bringing up the mistakes of a Labour MP on a daily basis to the point of persecution. But it doesn’t apply to Chhour or any of the others now they are in a Incompetent government.

She’s another very under-qualified minister who should have learnt by now, to keep her mouth shut unless she has something absolutely solid to skite about.
At any other time in our history a fubar like this would see the minister would resign.
