The NZ Herald has finally caught up to TDB, as we pointed out LAST MONTH, NZF will turn on ACT over the Regulatory Standards Bill…
Peters and his colleague Shane Jones have floated making changes after the bill returns from select committee and then passing it, as promised in the coalition agreement.
Sniffing a plot to water the bill down before it is passed, Seymour went public this week to remind his partners that the coalition agreement commits them to passing “the” Regulatory Standards Bill, not “a” Regulatory Standards Bill.
What Seymour has said in public is consistent with what had previously been said in private. Sources have confirmed to the Herald that he has made it clear behind the scenes that the Regulatory Standards Bill’s passage is as bottom line as it gets – and he’s willing to walk away from the coalition over it, bringing down the Government and triggering an election.

Here’s the reality.
The Regulatory Standards Bill represents the greatest trojan horse for corporate power in NZ Political history.
It will allow corporations to vet legislation using a very narrow libertarian interpretation of property rights over human rights.
It is dangerous and would have an immediate strangulation on democracy.
The extreme right want these powers to stop environmental legislation from catching up to their climate changing crimes.
The only hope the left have to defeat this is NZF!
Winston cut his teeth with the wine box inquiry and has fought for national economic severity ever since.
Allowing Corporations into Parliament to influence policy is an anathema to Winston’s voting base as well as Winston (especially if Winston isn’t getting a donation from them! Especially then!).
Another added benefit of shutting it down would be to annoy David Seymour despite him being Deputy and Winston would love giving Seymour a serve as much as Shane Jones wants to kick the nephs off the couch.
I know, I know, I know. Winston’s derogatory comment about Rawiri’s Ta Moko and his derogatory comments about his cowboy hat (after we all heard the emotional story of why he wears it) are new low pints for Winston. Comments that are so unworthy of Winston, let along Rawiri, but the naked truth is NZF are the only hope of stopping this corporate take over of our legislative body!
Thomas doubts that there is anything brewing, but the NZ Herald are very out of the loop.

This will be one of the reasons NZ First is pushing double digits. I also don’t think they would fear splitting the Government over this bill. The only party that would fear a snap election over this is National, because it proves they can’t handle two mildly different coalition partners (meanwhile Jacinda deftly handled her coalition partners in her first term). It’s all opportunity for everyone else.
Winstons big doners will pull him into line and he will meekly vote in favor as will Luxon and the rest of the gang of hatred .Winston loves being in government and will not risk an election .
It is blatantly obvious something is going down when NZ 1st mp’s are missing from the select committee hearings even on zoom.
Ok, hope you are right about Winnie being prepared to let piglet bring down Parliament over this as an election won’t be an assured win for them, Act would probably get in again. NZF have more to lose in an election so they probably don’t want to risk it, let’s see.
The next question is, if this horrible bill becomes an actual Act of Parliament, then will the next (hopefully much less neo-liberal) government be willing or even able to repeal and remove the legislation?
Under the bill they might find a way to prevent people they define as unworthy standing in elections?
Hopefully this has been Winstons agenda all along, to initially massage then squeeze Act like the pus boil that it is. If the pimple on the boil Seymour walks away from the CoC then my bet is Winston will hold on to enough votes to get over the line if an early election is forced. Labour better be ready to take the gloves off and land some knock out punches.
Labour could easily come out on top of this if Hipkins stands up and says the first thing his government would do if elected is repeal the legislation and explain clearly and comprehensively exactly why they would do that.
He might even be pleasantly surprised at the support he receives for standing up for the people above faceless corporates.
My guess though is he will disappoint yet again.

Labour has already said they will repeal, the Coalition of Cockups, Regulatory Standards bill. Don’t see TPM or the Greens letting the corporate takeover of NZ, continue even if Labour renegs.

We can only gather the ONLY Time Luxon would consider being seen “Sleeping rough” would be on an RNZAF plane that is prone to breaking down and Pre-election 2023 Promised Never to Fly if He ever became prime minister.
