Chris Bishop’s public outburst in no way comparable to Tory Whanau case – Katrina Bennett

Blogger Martyn Bradbury published an opinion piece on Waatea news on Monday, comparing Whanau’s experience to Bishop’s.

“Both have been involved in public drinking incidents, yet the criticism for Tory was all-encompassing, whereas Chris Bishop gets defended by the new Deputy Prime Minister,” he wrote.

Perhaps alcohol loosened Bishop’s tongue, but he’s never blamed it for what he said or the opinion he holds.

Whanau’s remarkable admission in 2023 was incredibly brave and defining. It was always going to dominate headlines and shine an extra-bright spotlight on a public figure already under scrutiny.

Had Bishop made a similar admission, the media response would have been the same. But linking his public outburst to another politician’s drinking problem is to draw the long bow.

The very first editorial of the NZ Herald was calling on white New Zealanders to go to war with Māori. In it’s 100 year history it has attacked unionists, women’s rights, Māori (lots) and environmentalism while championing the interests of the rich.

‘Ignoring double standards’ may as well be the byline of the NZ Herald.

Secondly, she refuses to acknowledge the difference and context of those two incidents.

Tory was in a private situation in her capacity as a private person. Bishop was a Minister of the Crown at an offical function, the fact Katrina can’t the tell the difference only highlights my point at the double standards!

Look, I’m no apologist for Tory Whanau, I have been heavily critical of her policy positions and have openly questioned her media qualifications after a series of disastrous interviews, but the way she was treated vs Bishop is obvious, yet Katrina refuses to see it!

The day after the allegations of Tory, there were calls for her to resign! Nothing like that has been called for with Bishop despite Bishop being a Minister of the Crown at an official function!

There is a double standard between white men with alcohol in public vs Māori women with alcohol in public, EXACTLY like there is between a middle class white woman being able to say the c word in Parliament and the punishment of a Māori woman doing a Haka in Parliament EXACTLY like there is between the punishment handed out to Māori MPs vs the punishment handed out to white MPs.

Pretending those double standards don’t exist only helps enable them.
