  1. The idea that “news media” has ever been independent of managerial or other outside interference or, for that matter, that newspapers represent the last bastions of democracy, is nonsense. When the profits of the first newspapers were the pennies people paid for them ethical reporting may have been involved, but since their value as vehicles for peddling products and political propaganda was recognized, ethical principles and the interests of people have played second fiddle to profits. Nevertheless the media still maintain the “Democracy dependent” facade – and still some people keep believing it.
