US President Donald Trump has warned that Nato faces a “very bad” future if US allies fail to assist in opening up the Strait of Hormuz, in an interview with the Financial Times, after Trump’s appeals to China, France, Japan, South Korea, Britain and others to send warships to keep the strait open brought no commitments.
Speaking from aboard Air Force One, Trump said:
“Really, I’m demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory, because it is their territory … they should help us. You could make the case that maybe we shouldn’t be there at all, because we don’t need it. We have a lot of oil.”
