Christopher Luxon stands by scrapping $6b resilience fund created after Cyclone Gabrielle

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says he stands by the decision to dismantle a $6 billion national resilience fund set up by Labour after Cyclone Gabrielle.

Then-Finance Minister Grant Robertson set up the fund in 2023 to address vulnerabilities in NZ’s infrastructure to extreme weather, with a focus on transport, energy, and telecommunications infrastructure.

There is a real obscenity in the Prime Minister prancing around the disaster site of Mount Maunganui because the landslide that occurred there IS BECAUSE OF the very climate change that his Government has done EVERYTHING to undermine.

National’s war on the environment, and let’s be really clear, IT IS A WAR, they have repealed and undermined every single climate change policy we have.

Their despicable back down on water quality, on methane targets, on public transport subsides, on dumping the climate adaptation budgets, fast tracking big polluters projects – EVERYTHING this Government has done in the last 2 years has been burning environmental protections and when the ramifications of climate change erupt in the way we saw on Mt Maunganui, Luxon has the audacity to appear and pretend he cares, when all indications are this Hard Right Government DO NOT care about the environment!

This Government has bent over backwards for Dairy, mining, property speculators and the Trucking Industry, they have given a green light to big polluters and as the ramifications of climate change play out in real time, the PM pretends to suddenly care.

Not only has National waged war on Environmental protections, they have under funded the Civil Defence we need when these events occur!

According to Vote Prime Minister and Cabinet (which funds emergency management leadership and support):

$21.794 million decrease relating to funding transfers between financial years
$1.800 million decrease for Civil Defence Emergency Management training and administration
$1.285 million decrease for the Pacific Partnership Programme
$0.860 million decrease for establishment and expansion of the National Emergency Management Facility

That’s a *total of roughly $25.7 million less for these core items in 2025/26 than previously budgeted. According to the Climate Denying ZB, it is wrong to demand these questions off the PM
