  1. Well said indeed. There is no doubt that the Children’s Commissioner is viewed as a champion for the children, and rightly so. The impact of the symbolism alone, cannot be under-estimated. On the other hand, unfortunately Oranga Tamariki has blotted its copybook more than once and publicly, and may never be viewed with the same level of trust as the Commissioner for Children. In this context alone,
    axing the Commissioner for Children can only be viewed as folly, and replacing it with a committee of faceless bureaucrats, quite cruel.

    Those outside of government may be unaware of the degree of martyrdom or masochism often needed to engage with public service bodies, and if they are, this makes any decision to dump the Commissioner even more inexplicable. I raise this with everyone I know, and even the apolitical are stunned at the whole notion of Parliamentarians abolishing the Commission for our most precious taonga, our children.
