  1. Unfortunately xenophobia and paranoia is sweeping the world. Nearly every nation is shutting it’s borders to every other nation, and huddling in fear. It is ironically the world folks like Trump wanted, minus the pandemic of course.

There are legitimate reasons to maintain the restrictions, and no reasonable person would suggest forgoing the quarantine for new arrivals of course.

Though everyone should also be aware of the racists and xenophobes coming out of the woodwork to abuse the crisis, and political parties like ACT claiming the pandemic justifies cutting unemployment benefits and imposing neo-liberal style austerity.

It is difficult to find the balance between keeping the country safe from Covid-19, and not allowing the racist isolationists to win over the public. NZ should not be allowed to become a place where refugees are hated and denied entry, or where people of Asian or African descent are refused visas, lodgings, or employment with Covid as a convenient cover.

  2. The overstayer issue is (to borrow a phrase from a certain someone) “a ticking time bomb.” Yes, petitions have been submitted to Parliament to initiate an amnesty under compassionate grounds for them but can we risk lengthy processes?
