  1. Labour drags National to the right..I wonder if Andrew Little calls that a win?

And people tell me to vote Labour? No thanks. Let me know when Labour starts representing me.

    Still a party for landlords.
Still wants to continue the student debt scam.
Still thinks a poverty min wage is OK.
Still continues the War on Drugs.
Still continuing middle class welfare via WFF.
Still doesn’t have the guts to nationalise key industries.
Still listens to the business community before the poor, unemployed, sick and marginalised.
Still lets Kiwi speculators run wild in the housing market.

i am not worried about a police state i am worried about a state without effective policing

    1. Kia ora Peter…

Tell me, have you ever lived in a police state?

      I have.

I spent eleven months in my parent’s homeland as my OE. At the time it was a Soviet-style “socialist” state, bordering the then-USSR. Apart from “total immersion” to re-learn my parent’s language, I learned of our history, visited cities, and lived with friends and family. So, I wasn’t just a “tourist”.

I also saw, first hand, what it was like living in a Police State. It was not pleasant. The first thing I noticed was that people were circumspect in what they said, until they got to know me. They always checked who was present when discussing their government and system. The “looking over your shoulder” is not just a ‘Hollywood’ invention.

The police that you so pine for were not your friendly constables who would come and assist you. Their first demand was “Identification!” Police stations were guarded by uniformed officers with machine guns strapped over their shoulders. Taking photos of certain places (eg, railway stations) was strictly forbidden. Granted that this took place during the Cold War, but I think you get the gist.

Oh, and don’t even think about have a few too many drinks and staggering home afterwards (even on foot). You’d be picked up; taken to the nearest station; and your stomach pumped. You were then “invited” to spend the night in one of their charming concrete cells. (No, it didn’t happen to me – but some of my younger friends shared the process with me.)

Aside from “keeping order”, the police in a police state have, as their top priority, the maintenance of State power. They are political police as well as trained to catch law-breakers. By definition, that is how a Police State must operate to survive.

The same principles operate whether the Police State is fascist or stalinist.

But don’t take my word for it.

I invite you to go live in North Korea to get the taste of what a true Police state is. I guarantee it will be an eye-opener for you.

  3. Good article Martyn,

National are clutching at straws here, as election approaches.

    $500 million over four years?

It will need all this just to control the massive surge in desperate immigrants with possible criminal tendencies!!!!!!!!

All smoke and mirrors is national as they play with large four year predictions that wont stack up!!

    Sorry NACTIONAL you are toast@#$%^&*()_.

  4. “National scream they will blow half a fucking billion on creating a Police State while Labour promise that they’re going to be just as butch on law and order.

A plague on both their redneck houses.”

Damned right, Martyn. When I first heard Kelvin Davis rabbitting on about increased police resources and Labour being “tough on crime”, I groaned inwardly. It’s like Labour haven’t been listening that prisons are a destructive, wasteful use of resource and do nothing to rehabilitate people.

Screw Labour. My vote will be going to the Greens in September.
