Toddler found in suitcase in bus luggage compartment, woman charged
A young girl has been found in a suitcase in a bus luggage compartment, and a woman has been charged with ill-treatment of a child.
Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said police were called at 12.50pm on Sunday, after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment during a planned stop in Kaiwaka.
“The driver became concerned when he noticed the bag moving. When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl,” he said.
My daughters friends were on this Bus as they went to a Kapa Haka performance up North.
They say that a young woman in a pink hoodie had gotten on the bus after putting her bag in the luggage compartment.
Shortly after getting on the Bus, the woman was seen pacing up and down the aisle.
When they stopped at Kaiwaka, the woman asked the Bus Driver if she could get a blanket out of the luggage compartment. The bus drivers microphone was still on so passengers heard the discussion because once the Bus Driver started approaching the bag, she noticed the bag was moving.
The startled Bus Driver demanded to know if the passenger had a dog in the bag, because that isn’t allowed on an InterCity Bus, (the luggage compartment is at the base of the Bus and you can’t put pets in there).
The woman started denying that there was a dog in the bag, but the Bus Driver wasn’t accepting that because they had seen the bag move.
The woman kept saying she just wanted to get a blanket and that there was no dog in her bag.
At this stage everyone thought that the woman had been caught with a dog (or cat) in her luggage.
The Bus Driver refused to believe there was nothing in the bag (she had seen it moving) and opened the bag and to everyone’s shock, it was a baby!
Once that moment was clear, the Bus Driver immediately called the Police and the Bus was held there as part of an active investigation.
I’ve caught many Intercity Buses in my time and the Drivers are always some of the best Uncles and Aunties you have the pleasure of driving with, this Bus Driver probably stepped in and saved this moment from being a tragedy.
God knows why any of this happened but the consensus seemed to have been that this was a mental health issue situation.

God knows why – but she was probably afraid of being charged or not being allowed on the bus. Or perhaps she was saving the child from supposed, possible abuse or was taking the child for possession. We all have a mental issue at present, if one looks at how we live in pretence that this is normal, that things being abnormal is normal. Our authorities not showing concern even mercy, looking the other way while allowing a state to annihilate another etc etc. Our role model does virtual golden shower on us etc. So can we try to understand why people aren’t behaving, acting, as ‘they’ should. They probably have never been given the script for the play, but are playing it by ear as we used to say sometime in the past.
Great comment, while it shouldn’t have happened we need to find out all the facts before any condemnation starts. Hopefully the mother and child get the sort of help that sets them up for a much better life although with the way the government has cut services it’s probably going to require a NGO to step up and help.
Poverty issue? Certainly, very very tragic issue. Are babies allowed to travel free? Must’ve been disturbing for all the passengers and especially for the kids.
Oh so the lookers on are the ones to be concerned about. Must be protected from those who break the laws set up by the PTB as to how to behave while you are be-ing. So sad for them to see raw humanity when it shows its helpless, hopeful self, outside the class system of the rigid middle and upper class, appearances are all and humanity, understanding it, rates low, trying to manage and not playing the game right,

Absolutely it will be, and the mother was obviously distraught as can be seen by her asking to get the blanket.
Never-the-less I wait for both sides to manage to politicise the issue.
There are some very sick, dangerous and deluded people in our country now, was this mum a meth addict or what and what exactly is being done about the scourge of meth and other deadly drugs destroying our country. These bad drugs appear to be more widely available under the CoC, too much time is being spent de-patching the gangs to prove a point when drugs are rife.
Let’s see what the facts are first.
Pretty sure “baby in suitcase in luggage hold” is the only fact that matters.
While that is important I recall the saying “those without sin cast the first stone” so we can protect the child while still giving the mother an opportunity to defend/explain her actions first.

Doesn’t matter what the facts are ennius the baby was in the baggage and that is a fact.
