Merciless blitz on starving Gaza — growing numbers
of dead and injured
Victims 21–22 August 2025:
71 more killed and 251 wounded
Since dawn, Israeli air strikes, missile–launches and gunfire on homes, as well as medical and other facilities, have resulted in 71 people dead and 251 wounded. The total number now killed in Gaza, since 7 October 2023, has risen to at least 62,263 and, that of the wounded is at least 157,365. The daily average number of men, women and children killed in Gaza is at least 90 and, that of those injured, is more than 229. A UN report states that, as of 14 January 2025, around 70% of those killed in Gaza were women and children.
World reacts as UN-backed body declares famine in Gaza
The UN-backed IPC says more than half a million Palestinians are facing catastrophic famine conditions amid Israel’s war. Gaza City and surrounding areas are officially suffering from famine, and it will likely spread across the enclave, a United Nations-backed global hunger monitor has said.
On Friday, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system said 514,000 people, close to a quarter of Palestinians in Gaza, are experiencing famine, with the number due to rise to 641,000 by the end of September.

Today’s confirmation of famine in Gaza governorate isn’t just another wake-up call. It is the blaring siren after months of alarms, and it’s a signal of what may soon engulf other parts of the Strip. This catastrophe is entirely human-made. Despite repeated warnings, and tireless efforts to avert it, the political will to ensure unimpeded humanitarian operations by the UN and NGOs has tragically fallen short.
Further escalation of the war will lead to more forced displacement, violence and widespread destruction. It will further destroy remnants of health, water, sanitation and hygiene systems, and increase disease outbreaks, worsening the conditions that drive acute malnutrition. I call for the facilitation of swift and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and services and commercial supplies across the Gaza Strip through all crossings and land routes, including directly to the north and to Gaza City. I reiterate the urgent appeal for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. I call again for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages and those arbitrarily detained, who must all be treated humanely.
Famine must be stopped at all costs. Ending it is a race against time.

Israel Lands Authority signs were then set up on the land, prohibiting residents from entering the neighbourhood and seizing possession of the homes.

The daily toll you’ve highlighted shows just how systematic and relentless this violence has become—it’s not just numbers, but a clear strategy of eroding every part of Palestinian life. What strikes me most is how even basic civilian infrastructure like medical facilities are being targeted, which removes any pretense of this being only about ‘security.’ It raises the question of how long the international community can continue framing this as a conflict rather than an occupation with ongoing war crimes.
What struck me most here is how the daily statistics—71 lives lost and over 250 injured in just 24 hours—risk becoming normalized in the way they’re reported. Beyond the numbers, this reflects a relentless pattern of targeting homes and essential services, which erodes the very fabric of civilian life. It raises the question of how international actors can continue to frame this as anything other than a systemic assault on human rights.
