136 killed — 364 wounded

Since dawn, Israeli air strikes and gunfire on homes, as well as medical and other facilities, resulted in the death of 136 residents and the wounding of 364. Civil Defence crews retrieved 11 more bodies from under bomb-damaged buildings, bringing the total number now killed in Gaza, since 7 October 2023, to at least 53,475. The total wounded is now at least 121,398. The daily average number of men, women and children killed in Gaza is at least 90 and, that of those injured, is more than 206. A UN report states that, as of 14 January 2025, around 70% of those killed in Gaza were women and children.

UN Relief Chief welcomes renewed aid deliveries to Gaza, but stresses it’s only a “drop in the ocean” of what is needed

The Israeli authorities have temporarily allowed us to resume delivery of limited aid into Gaza, following 11 weeks of complete blockade, and amid a spike in the military offensive. This is a welcome development that should remain in place.

Today, nine of our trucks were cleared to enter, via the Kerem Shalom crossing.

But it is a drop in the ocean of what is urgently needed, and significantly more aid must be allowed into Gaza, starting tomorrow morning.

We have been reassured that our work will be facilitated through existing, proven mechanisms. I am grateful for that reassurance, and Israel’s agreement to humanitarian notification measures that reduce the immense security threats of the operation. I am determined that our aid reach those in greatest need, and that the risk of theft by Hamas or other armed groups is minimised.

Our expectations for today’s crossings are realistic: Given ongoing bombardment and acute hunger levels, the risks of looting and insecurity are significant.

But it is our job to do everything we can to deliver, even against these odds. I am grateful to our humanitarian colleagues for their immense courage and dedication. They are the best of humanity.

The limited quantities of aid now being allowed into Gaza are of course no substitute for unimpeded access to civilians in such dire need. The UN has a clear, principled and practical plan to save lives at scale, as I set out last week.

We are ready to do so much more. To make this possible, we urge the Israeli authorities to:

• open at least two crossings into Gaza, one in the north and another in the south;

• simplify and expedite procedures; and remove any quotas;

• lift access impediments within Gaza and not conduct attacks in areas and times of deliveries;

• allow us to cover the whole range of needs – food, water, hygiene, shelter, health, fuel, gas and beyond.

To reduce looting, there must be a regular flow of aid, and humanitarians must be permitted to use multiple routes. Commercial goods should complement the humanitarian response.

We are ready and determined to scale up our life-saving operation Gaza and respond to the needs of people, wherever they are. 

We call again for the protection of civilians. We need a resumption of the ceasefire. Hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally.

This will be tough. But the humanitarian community will take any opening we have.

West Bank

Palestinian Monitoring Group — Since midnight on 07 October 2023, Occupation forces have been imposing a complete closure around the whole of the West Bank, preventing people (even including permit-holders) from entering both Jerusalem City as well as Israel, other than for especially-negotiated exceptions. Permanent military checkpoints impose severe travel restrictions within the Occupied West Bank.

Israeli Army attacks – refugee camp: Jenin – Israeli Occupation forces, firing live ammunition, continued their storming of the city and the refugee camp.

Israeli Army attacks – refugee camps – homes militarily occupied: Tulkarem – Occupation forces continued storming the city as well as the Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps, opening fire and wounding two people, Muhannad Abdul Hadi Saleh Othman and his brother Qusay, in the Tulkarem refugee camp. One resident was taken prisoner as more apartment buildings and houses became occupied, with some of them being taken over as military posts. More homes were demolished in the Nour Shams refugee camp.

Israeli settler attack – arson – violence and injuries: Salfit – 22:45, armed Israeli settlers stormed agricultural land in Deir Ballut, opening fire and setting fire to farm buildings as well as severely beating-up two residents, with one of them suffering a head injury.

Home invasions – stun grenades fired: Jerusalem – 19:00, Israeli Occupation forces, firing stun grenades, raided the town of Hizma and searched a house.

Home invasions: Jerusalem – evening, Israeli forces raided the town of Beit Anan and invaded a number of homes.

Home invasion and forced personal demolition: Ramallah – 07:30, the Israeli Occupation forced a resident, Ibrahim Abdel Qader Shalash, to destroy his home in the village of Shuqba – or otherwise be forced to pay an extortionate sum to the Israeli Occupation demolition squads, who would be sent in to do it.

Home invasions – surveillance: Qalqiliya – 21:20, the Israeli Army raided the town of Azzun and searched a house as well as a petrol station and seized surveillance-camera recordings.

Home invasion: Nablus – 08:30–09:30, Israeli troops raided the east of the city and invaded a home.

Home invasions and occupation – population–control: Salfit – the Israeli military, raiding the town of Bruqin, continued their occupation of a number of houses for use as military posts and searched many more homes. The soldiers also closed down a bakery after expelling the owner from it.

Home invasions and occupation – population control: Salfit – 20:20, Israeli soldiers continued to storm the town of Kafr al-Dik, occupying a number of homes and turning them into military posts. More homes were searched and the Israeli military also imposed a curfew, taking prisoner two residents.

Home invasions: Hebron – dawn, Israeli Occupation forces raided the town of Idhna and searched two homes.

Israeli Army population–control: Jerusalem – 16:00, the Israeli Army forced a resident, Khalil Abu Mayala, in the Shuafat refugee camp to demolish an apartment building that was under construction, or otherwise be forced to pay an extortionate sum to the Israeli Occupation demolition squads, who would be sent in to do it.

Israeli Army – 1 abduction – 1 taken prisonr: Jerusalem – midnight, Israeli soldiers in the city abducted a 17– year–old youth, Yamen Ziad Atallah Taha. They took also took prisoner one other person at the same time.

Israeli Army and settlers’ mosque violation: Jerusalem – 08:00, Israeli settlers, escorted by Occupation police, invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and molested worshippers.

Israeli Army – curfew: Salfit – the Israeli Army imposed a curfew on the town of Kafr al-Dik.

Israeli Army – agricultural sabotage: Salfit – 16:55, Israeli Occupation forces bulldozed a side road, north of Kafr al-Dik, uprooting dozens of olive trees.

Occupation settler land-grab and robbery: Ramallah – 14:40, Israeli Occupation settlers invaded the area of ​​​​Mughayer al-Deir, between the town of Deir Dibwan and the village of Mikhmas, and seized a livestock shelter owned by an Arab al-Maliha community member. They also set up a tent–dwelling there, in order to establish a settlement outpost.

Occupation settler arson: Ramallah – 20:55, Israeli settlers set fire to farm buildings, in the eastern plain area of ​​​​al-Mughayir village.

Occupation settler violence: Tubas – 09:25, Occupation settlers in the North Jordan Valley beat-up and hospitalised an al-Maleh villager: Shamekh Mustafa Daraghmeh.

Occupation settler terrorism: Tubas – 20:00, two Occupation settlers, in the Nab’ Ghazal Spring area of al-Farisiya, threatened (but failed) to bring their livestock into the area, in order to accuse residents of stealing.

Occupation settler stoning: Nablus – 18:05, Israeli settlers stoned passing vehicles, near the al-Sawiya village road junction.
