I’m glad Seymour removed the Māori name of school lunches
If the Government wants to strip te reo Māori from public programmes, then it should also strip away the pretence that those programmes serve Māori communities. The renaming of Ka Ora, Ka Ako is not administrative housekeeping — it is ideological theatre layered over cost-cutting that hits children hardest.

Cabinet removes te reo Māori name of school lunches scheme
The Government has quietly changed the name of the school lunches programme, dropping the te reo Māori title.
Cabinet papers obtained by Newstalk ZB under the Official Information Act (OIA) show that in October last year the Government agreed to update the name of the programme to “Healthy School Lunches”.
The scheme was launched in 2020 with the name “Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches”.
Associate Education Minister David Seymour, who is responsible for the lunches programme, said in a statement that “people need to know what things are”.
“That’s why we’re using an English name that everyone understands.”

Thank Jesus David Seymour has stripped the Māori name out of “Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches”!
His bastardisation of the school lunch program that created so many local jobs and fed healthy kai into the cheap corporate slop it has become does not deserve Te Reo!
And let’s be clear, the true cost of taking a $8 lunch and reducing it to $3 wasn’t the supposed cash saved, it was the thousands of local jobs and nutritional degradation…

The kitchen I volunteer in uses donated food to feed those in need .We often get the excess school meal.They have improved over the year and good value for money .
I understand more are getting them which is good . They are a tasty snack rather than a full meal so not sure if they fit the bill but it is better than nothing
