Cabinet removes te reo Māori name of school lunches scheme

The Government has quietly changed the name of the school lunches programme, dropping the te reo Māori title.

Cabinet papers obtained by Newstalk ZB under the Official Information Act (OIA) show that in October last year the Government agreed to update the name of the programme to “Healthy School Lunches”.

The scheme was launched in 2020 with the name “Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches”.

Associate Education Minister David Seymour, who is responsible for the lunches programme, said in a statement that “people need to know what things are”.

“That’s why we’re using an English name that everyone understands.”

Thank Jesus David Seymour has stripped the Māori name out of “Ka Ora, Ka Ako | Healthy School Lunches”!

His bastardisation of the school lunch program that created so many local jobs and fed healthy kai into the cheap corporate slop it has become does not deserve Te Reo!

And let’s be clear, the true cost of taking a $8 lunch and reducing it to $3 wasn’t the supposed cash saved, it was the thousands of local jobs and nutritional degradation…

Depending on the age group they were for, the energy level in each meal was between 13 and 17.8 percent of daily requirements. That should be closer to 30 percent, the standard in other high-income countries, the researchers said.

…we pay $2.74 to feed prisoners each meal. Seymour is giving our kids 26cents more and calling that charity!

Don’t give me that, “It’s the parents responsibility to feed their kids’ crap. If you are a man who seriously has a problem with ensuring our kids get a healthy feed at school, hand in your man card now because you aren’t a man, you are a bully.

A bully that likes to bully kids.

Hungry children don’t learn. We feed them, we feed us all.

I am sick to death of Government programs brown washing themselves with a Māori name while implementing policies that are brutal to Māori!

I say take back these Māori names, demand them to be stripped because they have not earned the mana of the Māori language!
