Kelston Boys’ High School faces charter school takeover bid by community group Bewt
A prominent Auckland public school is publicly distancing itself from a hostile takeover bid seeking to “forcibly” convert it into a charter school.
Kelston Boys’ High School acting principal David Samuela posted an open letter to school parents today, saying the takeover attempt was “not affiliated with Kelston Boys’ High School”.
“Our senior leaders and staff do NOT believe that becoming a charter school is in the best interests of our students and community,” he said in the letter, adding he was “disappointed in the lack of transparency in this process”.

Charter schools: David Seymour defends $10 million for 215 students
David Seymour is defending the $10 million budget for charter schools when seven have been operating since February this year with only 215 students enrolled in them.
By averaging the cost across the 215 students, it equates to roughly $46,500 per student and is significantly higher than the core funding per student at a state school, which is just above $9000.
There isn’t a definitive average cost per state student in New Zealand, and funding is determined by a range of factors. But Alwyn Poole, a leading education consultant who obtained the information via an official information act request and was a key figure in charter schools during its first round between 2014 and 2018, said it is a fair way to assess the cost of the system.
David Seymour is doing to education what he did to school lunches, underfund them and let them die!

Secretive legal advice argues charter school rules likely to breach FTA, labour rules
A select committee report has revealed previously confidential legal advice that charter school rules will likely breach international labour and free trade agreements.
The advice was sent to MPs and sector groups in a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS), but they were later told it was a legally privileged draft. Another version was then released with some of the advice redacted.
RNZ did not publish it at the time due to legal sensitivity, but the Public Service Association referred to the advice during its submission to the Education and Workforce Select Committee and RNZ published those comments.
Labour, in its minority report on the Education and Training Amendment Bill published on Thursday, revealed the advice – and the attempts to prevent MPs and the public from seeing it.
…so when the Left ever suggest policy that runs foul of free market Treaties, the Right are very quick to point out this will lead us into legal conflict, but when ACT are suggesting deregulating teaching standards so Charter schools can get cheap deals, a move that puts us immediately in conflict with International Labour laws, suddenly David wants to gamble?
There is no doubt at all that the Unions will mount a legal challenge to watering down teacher standards and they will take this channel of dispute.
ACT are trying to hide this because they know it will draw more scrutiny of their neoliberal experiment in education.

Like several other ventures (which have received a lot of Lottery grant money, by the way) like the Northern Education and Wellbeing Trust and Pro-Pare Athlete Management Trust, the silent partner is a Rhys Michael Cullen (you can see his signature all through the founding documents of BEWT).
Then Dr. Cullen first came to public attention in 2005 for publishing ‘Maori Health’, which according to the NZ Herald “calls for Maori to smoke, gamble and eat fatty foods if they want to… The book, published by the Kotahitanga Community Trust, also labels Maori health workers who promote a different message as brainwashed “house niggers” and “health Nazis”. ” Even back then, Cullen was being prosecuted for running a fake school.

We must all realise by now that there is no end in sight to the corruption and manipulations from thIs CoC-up. They are hell bent on destroying everything meaningful and don’t give a toss who gets hurt in the process. The Kelston Boys’ Highschool sabotage is a prime example of the audacity of Seymour’s ilk. Really, no warning, no public consultation, not even the courtesy of involving the Headmaster, school Board of Governors or parents. What in hell’s name is going on here? Who wants to take it over and who is financing them – again take a guess if it involves Seymour! This is yet another glaring reason why this CoC sick lot need to be DUMPED NOW. The mere fact that these new charter schools are costing us – the taxpayers – more than six times per pupil than state schools, is appalling, and all this while school aged children and their families live in cars, garages and sheds! FGS what have we become as a society? Have we totally lost the plot to honour MONEY, POWER, GREED?
So what are they paying the tax-payers for the land and buildings?

This scam was in the legislation right from the start, and it is not surprising some unscrupulous person is taking advantage of this. The history of the English Academy School system (their name for charter schools) shows that state schools are always liable for takeover either by private interests or because of governmental decree. Expect this government to try that stunt at some stage.
The COC are becoming brazen trying to take over a state school.
I’ve nothing against charter schools per se – education benefits from constant experimentation.
But the rate at which they consume public funding is excessive – they are supposed to self-fund, from families that desire a more intensive education. Where is the Taxpayers Union’s porky pig? There’s enough taxpayer funded fat in these schools to build a whole new Gerry Brownlee – though why anyone would wish to do so is beyond my humble imagination.
