  1. Nice one Martyn,

Yes and Steven Joyce killed rail and many drivers also on his ‘truck roads’ as a result of killing rail freight, so killng Kiwi music is added to Joyce’s list of fatalities..

  2. We all used to live in state houses. Then graduated to living in warehouses and dis-used spaces above shops like on Krd. That’s when I remember NZ music scene being organic. Good luck finding these spaces to come together and inquire and create.

The going rate for local gigs is about 2k. There are about 50 venues that I know of that will pay this operated under 3 or 4 umbrella companies so they can pay this (I’v been out of the game for awhile but this is still plausible) and there’s no guarantee that a collage band would have the name recognition to even justify paying $2k which is why we always fall back on Catcha Fire.

So all these promoters and accountants and the wealth of skills in the background aren’t there any more. And we called it a brain drain for a reason. Most of us took of overseas during the wave after wave of rent rises.

  3. I’d also point to rising university cost and removal of compulsory student union fees which lead to no time to actually start that student band and the straining of student radio and the buying up of independent music stations by commercial conglomerates. Spotify also has a lot to answer for.
