The discussion and action on the future of AKL port must be much more comprehensive then focusing on re-location only.

A blueprint for climate adaptation and resilience is in the making.

Can this be done with the existing parliamentary set-up, and excluding important stakeholders from science and civil society? Probably not.

  2. Perhaps Auckland Council could sell the Auckland port company, but not the land beneath it, jointly to the Whangarei and Tauranga port companies in exchange for shares in those companies. Thus their increase would match Auckland’s decrease, without financial loss to Auckland Council, thus no expropriation. Sure, jobs would go from Auckland to those cities, but that would be good: isn’t Auckland’s growth already out of control?

  3. Problem is the residents of Parnell and Remuera Heights do not want to see the port at the Waitemata, and they lobby like hell to have the port moved. Common sense has never been the dominant feature of Auckland’s planning, look at the wasteful sprawl and car designed infrastructure, necessitating fossil fuel burning.
