  1. So how would a D.H.B. like Canterbury cope?

C.D.H.B. has to cover all of Canterbury north of the Rangitata River and the Chatham Islands. This includes Christchurch, and fast growing towns like Rangiora and Rolleston. It includes rural populations – Hanmer, Kaikoura, Arthurs Pass. Notably it does not cover the Mackenzie Basin. That and the area between the Rangitata and Waitaki Rivers goes to South Canterbury D.H.B.

On the West Coast, granted the population is only about 32,000 people, a single D.H.B. covers from Haast to Karamea. One D.H.B. might be fine for the West Coast, but is C.D.H.B. really up to managing the health needs of most of Canterbury, or should perhaps Christchurch have its own?
