  1. I broadly agree with this piece, except for this bit;

    > It is more hard right than far right notwithstanding Deputy Leader Shane Jones’ MAGA bravado.

    Jones is not an outlier in the 2025 version of Winston First. Winston regularly sings from the same “anti-woke” songbook, and the party pushes all the same policies, from ramping up fossil fuel exploration to anti-trans bathroom policing. They are definitely more far right than hard right, where ACT are and have always been, although they too are now playing footsie with far right politics.

    A lot of the confusion in discussing all this can be avoided by following the politicalcompass.org example. Using left/right to talk about economic policy, and acknowledging that social policy is an orthogonal spectrum, from libertarian to authoritarian. Or if you prefer, liberal to conservative.

    1. To be fair, Winston pushes whatever he thinks will get him votes, no matter what. Hence is embracing of the anti-vax crowd after excoriating them some years ago.

  2. ACT are pretty much libertarians I would have thought. Which is a bugger because every time you put them in charge things turned to shit.
