  1. The situation is complicated, and there is some truth in the stalemate claim, it being infinitely harder to achieve a determinate outcome than to revert to static defense.

But for all its claims of a stalemate, Russia is making pretty profligate use of its vatniks to try to squeeze a few more metres out up north, hoping perhaps to thereby to reduce the pressure on its more vulnerable southwest.

International commitments matter, and a few more ATACMs may allow Ukraine to achieve some of its main objectives in the south: cutting the Crimean supply route, interdicting movements south of Tokmak, or reclaiming the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

As the conflagration in the Middle East spreads, the West may want to bring the Ukraine issue to a close. Facilitating the demise of the Kerch bridge may deliver that outcome.

  2. Stalemate?
    Surely not Ben
Russia is tired and scared (and probably emotional)
Her recruits are poorly trained, ill equipped, the shovels are badly made and losing their handles , they’ve run out of stolen washing machines, morale is bad, the vodka’s not getting to the front line in time, and Putin’s body double has lost heart.Putin’s secret funeral used up the last coffin and there were only crusts to eat.
Meanwhile the Ukrainian army is making huge advances, because they are morally superior and have access to wunderwaffen and have been highly trained. The infallible Leopards are making all the difference, just like the Javelins before them ,the Panzerfausen, Stingers , the Patriots,M72s,night goggles, bullet proof vests.
How can you talk of stalemate?
They’re halfway to Moscow you Pootsie stooge!

  3. Many thanks for the commentary Ben – keep them coming and ignore the kindergarten comments (above).

Someone said over a year ago that Russia has never fought a war without squandering at least half a million men in the process. Well, are we there yet? It cannot be far off.

The front has stagnated only because the USA won’t give Ukraine the kit it needs: Long range ATACMS and air power. Given those, they could destroy Russia’s ammo dumps and rail connections in the rear and starve the front line.

Both the start of the war and the current situation are on Biden and his incompetent administration. Biden triggered the war by attacking US domestic oil & gas production, thereby gifting Putin the revenue and misplaced strategic confidence to invade, then they drip fed the Ukraine with out-of-date weapons.

Where the other commenters are entirely wrong is in thinking Russia can win. In the broadest sense Russia has already lost. It has lost 3-400,000 men in battle and maybe as many again of its best and brightest have left the country. This is a country with an already precipitous demographic situation that cannot afford to lose its youth. Its armoury is depleted, and its military have been shown to be third rate incompetents. Its arms export revenue has dried up because would-be purchasers have seen how out of date it all is. Its energy sector is moribund since the foreign extraction technologists have left so it’s just a matter of time before it’s wells freeze up and cannot be restarted. Oh, and the country is dead broke. Anyone want a cheap Russian bride?

    1. Geez, you have to wonder how this conflict has reached an apparent stalemate, or stagnation, given how incompetent the Russian military are, according to you. Why would Ukraine need (additional) USA equipment, given the state of Russia’s military. Heck, Russian ammo dumps must be so depleted that they probably wouldn’t need attacking anyway.

And Ukraine’s offensive, the amount of ground they must have advanced/regained must be significant given the state of the Russian military. Of course, if they haven’t, at the very least, recaptured a lot of ground, well, that most likely is because Russia never took much in the first place, given their incompetence.

Yeah, it all adds up, useless at everything with barely two dimes to rub together. As such, this conflict should be all over, bar the shouting, pretty soon. And if not, well….

Peace to Ukraine. Peace to Russia. Peace everywhere.
