  1. Hmm – arguably New Zealand has been run by a Labour caretaker administration since Chippie took over.

Peters was a good foreign minister – and getting him out of the country as often as possible will probably suit the incoming administration. Shane Jones not so much.

    1. This may not be Winston Peters first rodeo, but it may be his last, Peters will want to leave his last term as his legacy. And how better to do that than as Foreign Minister.

I agree with Geoffrey Miller, thaf Foreign Affairs Minister would be a good fit Peters. Peters previous statements on the Middle East have been astute and balanced. Peters ‘Pacific Reset’ has some good stuff. Climate change was twice mentioned in Winston Peters reset document, a recognition of the priority the small Pacific Island nations place on this issue, and the dangers they face from it.

“Allow New Zealand to bolster our efforts to tackle priority issues for the Pacific, especially climate change – which is an existential threat in its own right for some island states.” Winston Peters, March 2018

“The burden of travel”, is not a big issue. In our connected world the new foreign minister can have a conversation with someone on the other side of the globe as if they are in the same room.

Winston Peters is adamant Jacinda Ardern will be thrown out of Government in the next election
      ‘I don’t think it, I know it.’
Former Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, Winston Peters, tells Mark Dolan of GB News he is certain Jacinda Ardern will be thrown out of Government in the next election…..

On those few occasions where a personal presence is necessary. Peters namesake Winston Churchill flew to the 1943 Tehran Conference in Iran from the UK, in a piston driven plane flat on his back on a mattrass. Compared to that ordeal, a modern First Class air ticket ensures a comparatively restful journey. Peters has described international travel as a “seductive experience” presumably meaning he wouldn’t be too adverse to doing it again.

Deputy P.M. for Peters would be a nice have, but would put David Seymour’s nose out of joint.
David Seymour as Deputy PM would doom this government to one term, and give us cause to be thankful for our 3 year electoral cycle. Best to stay clear of Peters and Seymour for Deputy, for a National Party insider.
