Christchurch police to carry firearms ‘until further notice’
All frontline officers in Canterbury have been told to carry firearms until further notice.The decision was made by the district commander, Superintendent John Price, today after two related incidents – in the suburbs of Wainoni on Saturday and Richmond on Tuesday night – in which officers were shot at.
One person has been taken into custody after the Christchurch shooting but police were still seeking one other person in relation to Wainoni incident.
All frontline police have firearms in their vehicles, but the Cantebury officers will also be carrying them in a holster.
In a statement, Mr Price said the decsion to arm all officers was not one to be taken lightly.
He said he believed it was necessary in this instance to ensure the safety of police staff and members of the public.
Police Minister Stuart Nash is backing the decision but said it did not mean that routine arming of police was on the horizon.
Mr Nash said he was told about the decision this afternoon.
He said it was a rare event and a temporary measure.
…I don’t trust our poorly trained cops as it is, arming them to the teeth is unacceptable.
We have a policing culture of containment, allowing Police with minimum gun training to carry guns is a recipe for disaster.
Why and how is this spike in armed offending occurring? That answer is the solution, not a gun toting nervous police force.
When more NZ cops get guns, more Māori get shot. That is the simple cruelty of that equation.
It defies belief that a bloody District Police Commander can make a call like this.
This is not a Police State, we don’t amputate civil rights because it makes their job a tad safer and easier. Somebody needs to remind Stuart Nash of that.

Carrying Guns will obviously incite others to do the same.
So when the police carry them they will obviously ‘encourage others to do the same meaning more guns coming into our daily lives now, sorry to say.

The Police association has been agitating for arming police forever, they’ve been furiously cherry picking statistics on firearms crime to this end.
This is a backdoor way to achieve that – hey look when Christchurch cops were armed no one was killed (there is still stuff all gun crime in nz ) so all cops should pack some heat..And then the arms race will begin.
Eliminate the methamphetamine trade, bust the gangs and leave the guns in the car and the public alone.
Well, cops often wont directly confront an armed suspect even if they themselves ARE armed. But if the suspect is loosely armed with a cellphone or something it’s all respect muh authoritahhhhh. The risk to themselves and bystanders is too high.
The plan was always to gather evidence after the crime, then eventually nab them later down the road – which is basically what happens. You can get coked up, beat up a prostitute, get arrested, and then all the armed robberies get pinned on him when they realise who the suspect is.
No question that police have to defend the public and themselves with lethal force, but arming police full time at the hip surely requires legislative and judicial oversight. NZ mustn’t become the wild west
If the cops are allowed to carry guns, every citizen should be allowed to carry a gun, so the NRL in the US would argue.
What is the position here, do people simply ‘trust’ the cops?
I’m from Christchurch and I’m Maori. I now have a higher chance of getting killed then I did a week ago, great.
Evidently all the gangs in NZ are heavily armed including the Rebels who have infiltrated the country from Australia, mainly Lebanese & Tongans.
I was told most of these gangs have the names and addresses of all the Police Officers here in NZ, so rather than having all out Gang Warfare wouldn’t it better to have highly trained teams to go in and sort out these low life scum out, who are parasites on NZ Society.
These Gangs add no value to NZ Society and have been allowed to proliferate in the last 10 years under the lackadasical fairy John Key and the National Party.
When the last time you came face to face with an armed (or any) criminal with no regard for the life of other people. In the last two shootings I applaud the brave officers who carried out their duties competently and professionally.
