  1. Normally I would not defend the Corrections Department but the issue of mental health is one that justifies defence. Corrections is often left with seriously mentally ill prisoners because there is no room for them in a secure facility elsewhere. Prison staff with minimal training in the area of mental health are forced into being responsible for looking after them. The Mason Clinic in Auckland simply doesnt have enough beds and I suspect similar facilities in other locations are the same.

    1. Yes, you are right regarding the inappropriateness of prison staff being forced to deal with people who should be in a secure mental health facility… My comment here would be to point out that the “great traitor” Douglas, who started the process of divesting the state of the responsibility for their care, and the corporate raiding party, otherwise misnamed the national party should be getting pilloried through the news media for forcing this onto the corrections department… I am constantly amazed that there hasn’t been a concerted campaign by the labour party, among others to ensure that the main culprits for this abuse of vulnerable people are escaping any kind of blame…

  2. Spot on Liz,
Sadly ignorance is a quality valued by those who consider themselves representatives of the bulk of our population. Only the US jails more people than we do…that says it all. Prisoners are not treated well and the evidence is clear to see. We have to reconsider our present systems of justice. The facts speak for themselves. Keep up the good work.

  3. and ppl wonder why the recidivist rate is so high, guess dehumanized mental health patents are cheaper to imprison than treat

  4. I’m with you Liz the number that should be in prison is so very small and they are a danger to society.

All people who are convicted should be in work gangs, cleaning the rivers amd all the other things that desperately need doing that governments and councils say they haven’t got the money for.

I can think of a few council and state houses that need painting – get people into apprenticeships. Learning useful skills.

Why are we not following the models overseas that have been so very successful and managed to drop their prison numbers significantly.

Ah yes because we now live in a punitive society where every little misdemeanor means you need to be locked up.

300 people in prison for driving without a drivers licence. Dumb Dumb Dumb.

  5. From deinstiutionalization (mental hospitals) to re-institutionalization in prisons. Full circle.

  6. I recall a few years ago that prisoners were able to do useful courses like Trade Certs in welding while in prison. This was removed as it was felt that this gave prisoners an advantage over people outside prison who had to pay for their own courses. Unfortunately this small minded punitive mindset is applied in other areas as well.

  7. The very expensive dungeons of the state. now referred to as prisons are hellish, and no wonder recividism is high, and suicide rates high also. Def a good time to write in on the ‘Justice’ revamp for those concerned about our future society.
