  1. Educations boards that Picot wanted demolished, were working extremely well and made Primary schools work across NZ no matter where they were or how wealthy the school’s community was.

The professional expertise, monitoring and guidance for every State school was very high on international comparisons.

Lange was a fool. He got rid of these vital Education Boards because he and a personal dispute and the local Education Board who did not agree with his complaint about his daughter’s teacher.

Lange was an egotist and fool that cost NZ’s children dearly over 28 years so far. He later admitted over RNZ that he did not know what he was doing. Just angry.

Provincial Education Boards had developed over a long period and employed an Inspectorate who managed School appointments, assessment of teachers, monitored school performance and gave assistance in a hands on fashion, all conducted in a very professional way. The School Inspectorate were educationalists who had come up through the ranks and were at the top of their profession.

The area Education Boards were voted for by parent School Commitees.
The area Education Boards also lobbied Govt for funding and now there is no one filling this role.

The Teacher’s Unions worked in with these “School Inspectors” for the good of all.

Lange’s folly has left education struggling and falling behind. Picot was a private school enthusiast and with Lange floated a modified version of an American system which has led to open crony-ism, stupid waste of resources as schools compete with each other making a very insecure and poorly served system.

This present govt needs to look at instituting area Education authorities that take responsibility for buildings, transport, teacher training and assessment . school appointments and provide an overview of each schools needs.

Resources needed for each geographical area are different but Provincial centralisation of expertise, management skills and resource distribution with efficiency and flexibility needed to better serve school communities.

Parents always had a say prior to Lange’s folly as School Committees were composed of parents voted in and they met regularly but did not have the onerous load that has been dumped on School Boards with virtually no ongoing educational experience or expertise.

BOTs are voted for on a number of platforms none of which provides what is needed to run a school.

The “School Trustees Association” is a Govt funded lapdog.
