Cheaty of Waitangi 2026: Brown on Brown unfriendly fire while the Right escapes accountability
Waitangi Day should be about accountability, power, and honouring Te Tiriti. In 2026, it became something else entirely.
As a hard-right government quietly advanced an anti-Māori, anti-worker agenda, Māoridom and the wider Left turned inward—fracturing publicly, feeding the right ammunition, and allowing those in power to escape scrutiny when they should have been politically cornered.
It was a weird Waitangi Day this year.
A Hard-Right Government Escapes Accountability
The Government must be thanking their lucky stars that Māoridom and the Left were too busy ripping themselves to pieces rather than attacking the worst Hard Right Government we’ve had in a generation.
This Government’s anti-Māori, anti-Treaty, anti-worker, anti-beneficiary, anti-renter, anti-disabled and anti-environment agenda strangles the common good for their donors interests. They should have been destroyed at Waitangi Day, instead they managed to escape any real scrutiny and protest.
Winston and Seymour were almost disappointed they didn’t get more abuse for their social media accounts to victimise off.
Brown on Brown: Left Infighting at the Worst Possible Moment
Labour and Greens championed unity on Waitangi Day by excluding the Māori Party.
Labour and Peeni had a messy ending.
Eru and the Kapa Kingi’s launched a fresh attack on the Māori Party.
It was Brown on Brown unfriendly fire and it all added ammunition for the right to use in the election.
Media Denial and the Reality of Economic Depression
The white noise in the background was the mainstream media denial that there was any depression in NZ.

Hopelessness, Alienation, and the Collapse of Social Trust
Voters are tired, and hurt and heart broken.
As isolation, loneliness and social isolation grows, many have gone down rabbit holes fuelled by social media hate algorithms and they live in a distorted and mutilated version of reality that is constantly ripe for emotional manipulation.

Foreign Corporations milk monopoly rentals from our crony capitalism economy. Exploitation of migrant workers and cheap mass immigration migration puts extra stress on an already underfunded infrastructure. Free market privatisation user pays mythology fails as all those we educate flee the country to pay off their student loan debt.
Communities have been stripped of funding and have no resources to be resilient or sustainable in a climate change future.
Borrowing for infrastructure remains a joke with zero focus on sovereign Investment as our solution.
The polluters and big business rig the political game to ensure their interests trump ours.
Hopelessness stalks the land of the wrong white crowd on these Shakey Isles this Waitangi Day.
There is a malaise so deep that even allies are stabbing each other before the enemy.
The Silence That Protects Power

I don’t think the bitter division within the Maori party equals *the Left* being bitterly divided – it’s cofined to a minor party and the two bigger left leaning parties (greens and labour) are showing unity. Nonetheless, it is a concern if many would-be labour or green voters are internalizing right wing erroneous messaging/propaganda that the opposition itself is bitterly divided, and ironic given division within the coalition (like NZ first not supporting National-ACT on India trade deal).
Two big problems with the Westminster system are
1. It is a system of winners and losers. That means that there is an inbuilt impetus towards conflict rather than collaboration, which affects Maori operating within the system as much as anyone.
2. No one claiming authority within the system can offer proof of legitimacy. The ballot is conducted in secret, and even if we accept that the election is conducted with integrity the actual and continuing mandate of any member of parliament is purely a matter of political conjecture. Thus we have no real evidence for how much support there is for Rawiri and Debbie on the one hand or Mariameno and Takuta on the other. Under rangatiratanga such matters would be transparent. We would know exactly who is supporting Rawiri and Mariameno at the present moment and in light of recent events. If that was the situation, then it is most likely that the present conflict would never have arisen. Each individual leader would be secure in his or her own support base, and would be naturally respectful of the support belonging to another.
If Te Pati Maori collapses it will be confirmation that European systems of governance are not a good fit with Maori principles of rangatiratanga, and since rangatiratanga is clearly a superior system of governance, it would be not a bad thing if these ructions led to Maori withdrawing from engagement with the Westminster system altogether.
