To be honest, I haven’t seen such hateful commentary by ordinary Kiwis in a long time, and that deeply concerns me as a New Zealander more than it does as a Māori because we have to find ways to accept one another and live together in this country.
Teachers and our kids deserve better. Next to being a parent, teaching is the toughest and most undervalued societal role. Teachers deserve more. They nurture the mind’s which become our nations future.

This Office was set up as a result of the experiences of Tā Mark Solomon and Dame Tariana with climate change on their iwi.
It didn’t get much coverage on our TV News but an estimated 15,000 Aussie students staged a school strike last Friday to tell their politicians they had to do a lot more about Climate Change.
On the Marae show last Sunday alongside Dr Lance O’Sullivan, I debated the health system and it’s inequity for Māori. It ended up being quite a robust debate which was probably necessary as Lance in my view, has said a few things that are just plain wrong.
The scientific facts get more and more grim with every passing week. Barely a month after the IPCC presented their biggest warning to date that the planet risks catastrophic climate events if we don’t make radical change within a decade, we hear last week that even meeting the targets in the Paris Agreement will dangerously warm the planet and that the tipping point for irreversible ice sheet meltdown is 1.5 degrees Celsius. That on top of the news that the 2018 emissions will be the world’s highest topping even 2017 which was also the highest on record.
