‘They’re not living it’: Farmers’ blunt response to flood support package

“Not enough,” was the blunt reaction of several flood-weary Tasman farmers following the announcement of a half-a-million-dollar Government-led support package.

As the sun returned to the soggy province and the clean-up switched to high gear, Agriculture Minister Todd McClay inspected flood-damaged farms and unveiled the funding package – of which $100,000 is tagged to the Farmers Adverse Events Trust, $100,000 for the horticulture sector and $300,000 will be given to the Mayoral Relief Fund.

Previously, the Government gave $100,000 to the region following the first flood event in June.

However, McClay’s announcement was met with a muted reaction from some badly affected farmers.

There is a political problem looming for the Political Right.

While they deny climate change and decimate Climate Change budgets, the extreme weather events continue to decimate their farming electorate.

On the one hand the Right and Big Dairy scream ‘climate alarmism’, their rural electorate are downing or burning or both.

The NZ Mainstream Media refuse point blank to connect the extreme weather events we have seen in the North of the South Island to climate change because they know it kicks up a fuss inside the agricultural community.

Instead we look to enslave beneficiaries to clean up the mess and announce that in 20 years the Government won’t bother bailing properties out (despite those Government’s exacerbating the pollution that is creating those weather events).

National took $2.4Billion out of the Climate Emergency Response Fund and have done bugger all in terms of preparing for more climate change…
