  1. There aren’t enough farmers to vote in a government, the farmers are too poor to fund the National Party, so who’s he going to have to explain to?

  2. I read a story the other day about how China now has too many cows and big dairy is going broke .So fonterra best hurry up and find a new market for all the stuff they have been selling to china .Chinese farmers are now culling record numbers of cows .
The plus side is we will no longer need to send cows on disgusting boats to china to satisfy a few red neck hillbillies that are living in the past of the good old days .

  3. If we have to dependent on a large overseas market we would be better off with this being India than China.

  4. The acrobatics from Baldrick will be interesting to watch. NZ Industrial Dairy needs Chinese trade…but a declining US Imperialism wants a stoush with China and BRICS which involves 5 Eyes partners and AUKUS.

A key point is the USA will not do a free trade deal with NZ or admit Dairy Tarrif free. Sucking up to the yanks will not have a positive effect for Dairy operators. So there are contradictions galore, including the fact that NZ does not need large scale dairying anyway because of the effect on our waterways, emissions, animal cruelty and exploitation. But, but, you say? well even if industrial Dairy has a good year remember this–trickle down to the people does not happen!

  5. Neoliberalism has rendered us utterly dependant on China. Of the two superpowers we might split with, USA or China, China has the more immediate hold on us. We rely not only on their market but our low wage economy also relies on their cheaper manufactured goods to provide the sleepy hobbits with toys to keep them entertained and from revolt.
We ditched any pretence of striving to become a robust self-reliant nation many, many decades ago.

    1. Correct, there used to be all manner of quality manufacturing and service industries here…footwear, clothing, textiles, consumer electronics, car assembly with high local component count, metal working, joinery, furniture, building materials… to name some.

  6. I was in NZ When UK joined the EU.Doom and gloom was the message but we survived and infact grew.
Both main parties have the skillset to work out an answer to the current power play. The sun will still rise in the morning and life will go on .

    1. Trouble with your theory Trevor is that the Nats have conceded to Seymour and Winston.
Winston is bending in the wind so you don’t know where he will end up.
Seymour is beholden to the Atlas group so we know where he will go and it won’t be towards Asia and China in particular.
Can only see one possible outcome here and it won’t be the compromise you may wish for.

    2. We survived severance, but our overall economic situation has slowly but steadily worsened.
This observation is not necessarily an endorsement of the earlier dependence on the British market.
