Alliance Party Calls For NZ Government To Speak Out Against Military Escalation In Iran

The Alliance Party is calling on the New Zealand Government to make a clear statement opposing further military escalation following the latest United States military attacks on Iran.
Alliance Party Leader Victor Billot says the current trajectory of U.S. foreign policy under the corrupt and dangerous Trump administration will result in a terrible human cost.
“Past military actions in the Middle East have led to catastrophic loss of civilian life and long-term regional instability,” says Mr Billot.
“New Zealand must not remain silent while unilateral military actions threaten to spiral into wider war.”
Mr Billot says the Alliance recognises the horrific human rights abuses of the Iranian Government, but warns that the external military aggression is driven by self-interest rather than concerns for Iran’s people.
“Bombing campaigns entrench conflict and endanger ordinary people.”
The Alliance Party is calling on the Prime Minister to:
- Publicly state New Zealand’s opposition to further military escalation in the region.
Summon the United States Ambassador to convey New Zealand’s concern and reaffirm this country’s commitment to peaceful solutions.
Initiate a parliamentary review of New Zealand’s defence and intelligence cooperation arrangements to ensure they align with an independent and principled foreign policy.
The Alliance also reiterates its long-standing opposition to the use of economic warfare aimed at harming vulnerable civilian populations.
The Alliance is calling for:
- An end to the decades-long economic blockade of Cuba.
- Respect for national sovereignty in Venezuela and opposition to foreign-backed destabilisation efforts.
- De-escalation of US threats and territorial posturing involving Greenland.
- An immediate end to genocide in Gaza and the application of meaningful international pressure to halt attacks on civilians.
Mr Billot says New Zealand must consistently apply principles of peace and human rights.
“The Alliance stands for a New Zealand that acts as a respected voice for peace and solidarity in an increasingly unstable world. Silence is not neutrality, it is complicity.”
