The self congratulatory back slapping we all had to put up with on Twitter from Stuff.co.nz management over Paula Penfold’s impressive effort at looking into our prison system failure was always doomed to implode.
In the very same week they were celebrating themselves, stuff.co.nz couldn’t resist running the obligatory ‘look at what prisoners are eating fro Christmas Dinner‘ with all the obligatory undertones of ‘their victims aren’t going to get cold apple pie and a couple of bots of roast chook’ redneckery.
Any hope that they had actually evolved beyond their usual knuckle dragging sensible sentencing lynch mob headlines was killed off this week with this ridiculous piece of knee jerk bullshit masquerading as news…

What Paula failed to look at in her multi-part prison extravaganza is just how utterly racist our judicial, justice and Police systems are and how the very corporate mainstream media she works in is ultimately to blame for the social fury that is whipped up into lynch mob frenzies when it comes to crime.
Why ask Maud what she thinks? It’s just going to be ill thought out garbage used for clickbait anger reading. The media have zero interest in calming the average ill informed voter down when it comes to prisoners, they are there to twist and twist and twist that knife of resentment so much so that NZers only care about how much a prisoner is forced to suffer as opposed to any real debate about rehabilitation.
A prisoner took a photo of themselves while in prison using a smuggled in cell phone – shock horror, cue all the claims of an adult holiday fun park. Forget our private prison empire has hit 10 000, forget many are being beaten secretly, forget many are being abused, forget many are being tortured, forget that many are more damaged coming out than when they went in, forget that thousands have been locked up longer than they were supposed to be, forget that ACC has a 30% share holding in the private prison out at Wiri, forget that there are allegations of fight clubs at Wiri. Forget all that, apparently someone shoving a cell phone up their bum to take a selfie is a far bigger story for stuff.co.nz.
Corporate Mainstream media is part of the problem of our out of control Prison Empire, it isn’t the solution to it.

It is incredibly unsettling to have your place literally smashed into and robbed – with all the necessary costs and stress of security upgrades following. She is entitled to an opinion.
One of the reasons I stopped following this site for a while was the intense Anglophobia shown by many respondents and now I shall say f-off for your intemperate attacks on a very nice person.

Oh no, not a photo sent from a Corrections Department run prison! Surely there must be a way to suggest it was really from a privately run establishment.
