The health researchers behind the just-published analysis argue the Government needs to double the number of children served by its newly revamped lunches in schools scheme.
It’s long been known that hungry students struggle to learn: food poverty has been cited as a big barrier in New Zealand’s scoring under the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa).
But a comparison between that and two other global datasets has allowed a team of researchers to look at the link in greater depth. After analysing food insecurity levels with subject-specific scores, the team revealed a stark trend.

Up to 2000 people could lose their jobs as a result of the government’s change to the school lunchesfunding model.
Currently up to 156 school lunch suppliers made up of businesses and local trusts feed their school communities under the Ka Ora, Ka Ako healthy lunches programme.
The Ministry of Education says 75 of those provider contracts will end on 24 December after a decision to partner with the School Lunch Collective – run by international company Compass Group.
One supplier, Trust House, will have to let go all 47 people employed to run the programme because it was blindsided by the decision and thought its contracts had been extended to 2026.

Thousands of jobs are on the line as 75 suppliers will lose their school lunch contracts at the end of the year.A consortium led by global catering giant Compass Group won the contract to deliver free school lunches to 176,000 students under a new model.The consortium, which includes Libelle and Gilmours, will deliver lunches or ingredients to schools at $3 a pop, down from up to $8.69 under the current model.Suppliers who have missed out on the contract say the new model is a “massive blow” to their business.
…which in turn kills off the local element of the school food programme, the ability for parents to help out and become engaged, the use of local farms and food grown at school as part of the process.

Have the media done costings on the waste being produced by all those 100s of thousands of foil containers that the food comes in, and, the plastic seals that are used as a lid …also the toxins given off by the plastic when the food is heated.
If Seymour thinks this is the answer to getting more children back in the class room and learning at a much higher level than before, then his delusion runs even deeper than the 8% who voted for him.
He is deeply deluded. If he had children of his own, he’d know full well that what we see in that foil container, wouldn’t impress anyone.
What child is going to go to school for a lunch like that?
For the parties of “commerce” ACT and National seem to have so many commercially inexperienced bozos. Any person in real business who thinks that half the price gets you the same delivery is an idiot. I wouldn’t trust Seymour to run a cake stand at a fair, far less eat his products.

If they look like a restaurant waste bucket, Seymour needs to get some of the competition in that he so desperately loves.
Given what a manipulative turd Seymour is, you could bet with reasonable assurance that he’s trying to tank the whole thing on purpose. A bit like making sure the budget number for health is too low and then screaming blow out.
We have a real problem in NZ/Ao not just with unemployment increasing but with a rising number of young people who are actually “unemployable”. Surely, even Seymour can see that we need to invest more, not less, in our children, especially those who are not succeeding at school. Ignore the blame game and the temporary fiscal savings and the rigid ideology. An extra $5 on healthy lunches could be just all we need to help a struggling child grow up to be a productive member of society

It is recognised all over the world that children having a decent lunch at school is a good idea.
Many countries do it. They know that busy parents, most of whom work, have a lot of calls on their time and money and this is one problem they can be relieved of fairly easily.
Children benefit, parents benefit and local communities benefit.
Teachers also benefit being no longer called upon to buy lunches for their pupils who cannot bring lunch to school. They also benefit by having fed children to teach, not hungry disgruntled ones.
The ZB twits will complain for the sake of complaining. We should ignore them as they never have anything relevant or inspiring to say. Their specialty is moaning and they always imagine that someone else is getting something they don’t. Greed and envy are their motivators.
Makes you wonder if they were presented with these meals as the main part of what they get to eat each day, if they would gratefully eat it. They can smugly complain because they know they will get something more appetizing looking and never be put in that situation.
If they have nothing better to do than ring up ZB and grizzle over the radio, they don’t deserve our attention.
Instead, they could volunteer at a local school, Helping with reading or maths, putting their vast brains to some useful purpose. No, they don’t want to do that. They’d have to leave their comfort zone and face the children they are complaining about.

Davis Seymour has had numerous chances to show us how he can do things better. He’s failed in every instance and should be removed immediately from his position. He’s a disgrace.

I can’t let thid go. I was in a kitchen that was leased to help out the local company that was contracted to do the lunches in my area at the start of the last program. It was a disaster. They couldn’t heat the food in time, lots of the food was going to the wrong schools, people complained of portions. The staff that made them were givem one for their staff lunch and they all refused to eat them. At the start more than 60% of the lunches in our area were refused. The potatoes were powdered instant, the sauce dishes were packet sauces diluted to stretch out to manage the costs and even last year (whem I was no longer working in kitchens) my son brought home to show us raw pork and undercooked beef. And I mean half cooked stew or gravy beef. My daughter brought home Mac n Cheese that was chopped up cold pasta in milk with no seasoning or cheese. Prior to that we thought she was lying. Her veggie pizza was a piece of pita bread with tomato paste, chickpeas and pumpkin on it. Sometimes it had cheese, sometimes not. So don’t tell me this is all because they ruined a good program. A lot of the local companies were garbage.
That said, there is ZERO excuse for a company supposedly this well versed in foodservice and running these types of programs to be making the same stupid, lazy and pathetic mistakes that a local smaller company scaling up by a huge amount might make. Compass has a horrible reputation for food and foodservice and since no one holds them to task and account for them failing to meet quality guidelines and standards EVERYWHERE they operate it’s beyond appalling that those muppets somehow got the contract.

In one sense I am glad my father is dead in that he is not here to see the nation for which he, and his comrades, fought, and for which they had such high hopes, has descended into such petty squabbles by a pack of miserly, spiteful, self centred, vindictive, short sighted, vicious bastards.
For a moment let us take it for granted that parents SHOULD provide their children lunches.
BUT we have to face the fact that some parents DO NOT provide their children with lunches.
Are these children guilty of anything? Is it their fault their parents do not feed them? Why must they be penalised for their parents’ wrongdoing?
The short sighted view taken by various whingers is, ‘ I should have to pay for the feeding of another person’s child’.
This is short sighted because it assumes that children belong to their parents alone.
They do not. They belong to the nation as a whole. They grow up. Healthy children grow up to become healthy adults who work, spend their income, pay taxes. The grizzlers who object now will be supported in their old age from the taxation revenue generated by such children.
Impoverished, hungry and embittered children will grow into delinquents, drug addicts and career criminals that will drain and stunt our society.
This has happened before, the depression of the 1930s resulted in malnourished, sickly children that needed care in Health Camps.
Not only do we not learn from mistakes, we seem to delight in repeating them

Why must I pay to feed the kids of drop-kick parents?
Andrew they feed kids in schools all over the world. It is not a new concept. It doesn’t mean that the parents are drop kicks it just ensures that children have a decent meal at lunch time which sets them up for learning the rest of the day and it actually encourages children to go to school. The point is if you are going to feed the children in school at the expense of the taxpayers give them a decent meal, give them a meal that is nutritious and edible not mush that nobody will eat. This will cost the taxpayers more in the long run through wastage,loss of local jobs and children not going to school. If this lot didn’t give borrow so much money to give the wealthy tax cuts there would be absolutely no reason to give children mass produced mush and maybe the so called drop kick parents could actually afford to feed their children
Because the average price of a house in N.Z. is now 14 times the average annual income, as opposed to to 3 times the average income, back in the 1970s, and wages haven’t kept pace …

Add to that the privatisation of the energy sector causing prices to increase dramatically… despite Bill English telling everyone it would do the opposite ..increases way above inflation.
Add to that the monetisation of higher learning..ie charging people to go to University…$30,000 for a basic degree ..which won’t get you far without further higher learning… more costs.
How much did it cost in the 1950s 60s and 70s…answer …nothing.

Why do kids from families that earn an average, or below average income, need feeding school lunch by the state?…
Because the state has engineered it so only the wealthy and upper middle classes…who are usually cradle to grave silver spooners with old boy networks can afford to do so.

Not too long ago in one of his own facebook postings(I think) Seymour posted about the wonderful food he had a local cafe in the the Epsom electorate.
In the last week we now see the dreadful almost Pigs-swill poor quality food the Seymour expects to be feeding NZ school students.
Now if Seymour’s favourite cafe served that sort of food would he be extolling as to how fantastic the food is or would he simply not make any mention about the poor quality food????!!!
