  1. The big mistake that us progressives and lefties make is believing that government mistreatment of those in poverty is somehow accidental and that if only the ‘mistake’ could be explained the government would change course.
    In reality picking on poor people is electoral gold. A similar thing is happening in the UK at the moment over providing free school meals to children in poverty. The progressive view is that the UK government has made strategic mistake and popular anger will sway there position.
    This is not the case – as with NZ’s government the UK government is speaking to a large section of their voting base which despises poor people and sees them as second class citizens worthy of contempt and devoid of rights. Amongst the asset owning and tax paying working and middle classes these views may not be overtly expressed but they run deep and any government that wants to remain in power must show it’s willingness to throw the first stone at the weak and vulnerable.
