  1. I see the guys business partner just happened to be hit by a car a day of two before.

  2. That a superyacht should sink in a freak wind with no sails up begs questions about the competence of the skipper or the designer of the boat. These vessels are generally designed to take knock-downs when under sail in storms in the open ocean so there’s no way it could have been blown over with bare masts. I can think of only a couple of scenarios where this boat could have gone down:

The mast was struck by lightning, and it blew a big hole in the keel (it’s happened before). Most modern yachts have keel-stepped masts and are made from carbon fibre. This boat had the highest mast going, so it’s really just asking for it.

The main saloon door and all the inner compartment doors had been left open and the boat was swamped by a wave. Why didn’t they shut down when they saw the wind rising? Was there nobody sober on watch?

  3. My main observation is that we pay enormous attention to a handful of wealthy (white) people drowning in their luxury yacht, while nearby dozens of (desperate non-white) migrants drown almost every second day in their shonky boats.

Similar situation when the homemade submarine sunk while approaching the Titanic: at the same time, entire boatloads of migrants were drowning in the Mediterranean.

    Weird, eh?

    1. Because the rich are entitled for their story to be heard.
      The rich are very entitled.

    2. Yep, it’s weird. It’s sad the lack of care and blind eyes for desperate drowning refugees and the whole civilian Palestinian population. However in this strange case bad juju can be the only explanation for both co-defendants in the fraud trial to die within two days of each other in freak accidents, after freakily winning pretty much an unwinnable fraud trial, as less than 1% ever get off.

  4. I have no idea of the veracity of Martyn’s contention here, but what is known is that hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers per year die from drowning in the Mediterranean–and not many if any know their names. Perhaps they should book a luxury yacht rather than a dinghy or leaky fishing boat when next escaping from an authoritarian homeland.

This is rich listing, like the dicks whose submarine imploded visiting the Titanic wreck site. Super Yachts are an abomination and waste of resources.

  5. I remember after the Christchurch earthquake there was a news story about 2 Israelis caught up in it, can’t recall if they were injured or not.

Turned out they had multiple passports on themselves, spirited away by a private Israeli plane out of Christchurch airport.

The story seems now to have been buried.
