  1. Now let’s be clear however, Reserve Bank independence IS bad. The state bank should not be operating solely to minimize inflation, but instead to benefit workers, and should be in the business of mortgages and other loans so that filthy Australians don’t steal all our money.

    1. Exactly. Reserve bank independence means capital has a veto over elected government. Why not the same for labour unions?

    2. I agree with you @ M.K. The financial complexities that transact and generally and broadly exist between AO/NZ and australia are deep, dodgy and corrupt as fuck. Just ask ron brierly. The titan of nu zillind industry and dodgy pedophile.

      1. It was the invoking that lead to Labour’s downfall. The Bank governor cannot do both control inflation and aim for low unemployment because all that happens is both suffer.
The Governor aims to stop inflation the government then works to keep people employed within those boundaries. Under Labour inflation was out of control and so they kept unemployment low by make more unproductive public servants.

  2. Does Winston lose his shit when she talks about the economies of other countries, as she needs to?

Agree with Martyn, Winnie has Trump’s dick so far down his throat he’s making incoherent gargling noises.

Before the NZF crowd arrives, here’s a question which has been posed to all of you previously but of course, never answered.

What tangible gains for the people of Aotearoa has NZF delivered with their policies in this term of government?

    Name one, just one.

  3. Winston is proving her point by doing literally the exact thing to her she’s calling out Trump for doing to the head of the FED

  4. “Dr Breman’s signature on the statement indicates the support of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, which is statutorily independent from the New Zealand Government.” Reserve Bank statement to Radio New Zealand.
Put another way. ‘Winston – it is none of your fucking business if one banker expresses solidarity with another.’

  5. The independence of the Reserve Bank means that the economists there have free range to apply their faulty dogma. What particular cult of economics is in command in the Reserve Bank? Is the economics cult of the Reserve Bank the same as the cult of economics in the Treasury which is not independent?

    1. Yes, the letter in support of Jerome Powell was an act of solidarity among central bank governors who adhere to a particular economic dogma and are jealous of their own privileged position of non-accountability to the public. That does not mean they were wrong in their opinion of Powell, and it certainly does not mean that Winston Peters is right. It just means that central bank governors are a group with interests of their own and immense power which they are loath to have challenged from any quarter. It is a pity that the challenge had to come from the likes of Donald Trump and Winston Peters, but there you go, that is the current state of the world.

      1. Seriously? Every economic pundit is averse to Trump influencing and taking over the Fed for his personal gain. Geoff, think a little outside black and white and you will see the real picture. The central bank governor’s role is to stimulate the economy for every person, not just Trump, his allies or his donors. Can you seriously not see this?

  6. I must be honest and admit I didn’t even know what the word “quisling” meant. Thanks to Dr Google that describes Peters perfectly.

I have said this elsewhere but I am now so Bloody Over Winston Peters. He is Misogynistic, Patronising, Bullying, Narcissist, Lacks any Credibility, Morals and Ethics.

He has been a Decades Long Trougher on the NZ Taxpayers. About the ONLY thing he did for NZers was to crate the Super Gold Card. After that Winston Peters Has Only Looked after Winston Peters. He has since being in this current farcical government put HIMSELF First and NZ LAST. It’s all an EGO Quest for Peters.

I support what Anna Breman has done. Good on her. She has gained my respect. Unlike the Dinosaur that is Peters whom I haven’t trusted for the past 3 decades i.e since election 1996. Back then Peters showed his proclivity to Lie when it suited him and he has carried on that horrific Habit to this day.

I hope him and his comedy of a political party is thoroughly thrashed on election day. He and his cronies so do deserve to no longer exist in the political arena.

    1. Just noticed a Typo on my part and so my apologies.

I meant the ONLY thing he did for NZers was to CREATE the Super Gold Card.

  7. Central Bank independence implies independence in the implementation of monetary policy, not the independence to dabble in overseas politics. However the former is itself a political issue anyway and, insofar as she is criticising the type of interference – threatened investigation – she is probably on firmer ground in showing support for Powell.

  8. I seem to be at odds with other commentators here who are talking about whether the Reserve Bank should, or should not be, independent.
Is it not about free speech and the fact that Anna Breman is entitled to express her opinion?

  9. While I am no friend of Donald Trump or, since recent times, Winston Peters, I have to admit that Peters is correct on this point. New Zealand’s central banker should not be interfering in the affairs of any other central bank, and neither should other central bankers interfere in New Zealand (which they have traditionally regarded as their rightful prerogative).
However, regardless of what the Governor of the Reserve bank has done (side with her Nordic kith and kin, which is understandable, and with New Zealand’s traditional allies Canada, Australia and the UK, which would normally be unobjectionable to those in government) it is interesting that Winston Peters has once again decided to follow the lawless, manic and dangerous path of Donald Trump which can only end in catastrophe for the US and its principal allies, including New Zealand.
I can understand that “..as over a dozen global central bank leaders have just warned us, what happens in the US matters worldwide”. That means that President Trump is complicating the job of New Zealand’s Reserve Bank.
    How, then, to respond?
One way is to jump, or cautiously place a toe, into the cesspit of US politics.
I suspect that will have no positive effect, and could have negative consequences, which may concern Winston Peters, but would not particularly worry me.
The other way is to restructure New Zealand society and the economy in ways that do not leave it so vulnerable to the whims of a man who is both mad and dangerous.
Anna Breman cannot do that. As I understand it, she is not even a New Zealand citizen and she has very little connection to this country. That, is why she was chosen for the job, and therefore it is deeply ironic that Peters told her to “stay in her New Zealand lane”.

  10. The Reserve Bank does not have free range, but does have indepedence. To be absolutely clear it is the Goverment of the day legislates to set the parameters of the Reserve Bank. The Reserve Bank then works independently within those pasrameters. On getting into power the current goverment withdrew the parameter of considering low uneployment, just leaving the main parameter as an interest rate target of 1-3%. If the current goverment want the Reserve Bank to stimulate the economy they have the power to legislate a greater importance on that. It is the goverment of the days role to stimulate the economy, lowering interest rates to stimulate the economy is just an inflationery suger rush that does not last.

  11. Winston is acutely aware of the need to find someone – (anyone else!) to blame for the devastation wrought by this useless coalition. He’d also like to avoid anything that might attract the ire of the rampaging sub-ape Trump.

  12. “Finance Minister Nicola Willis declined to comment on the matter.” Lol of course she would having done what Trump is trying to do.

I’m reserving judgement on the new “Ice Queen”. Let’s see how she acts over the next year. If she ruffles the non-independent feathers of Willis and property developer John Key (who has called for large rate cuts), as much as Powell is ruffling property speculator Trump’s she’ll be on the right track.

  13. Matua Winston last stand makes him take a truly villainous turn akin too, Samuel L. Jackson’s character from Django Unchained.

Must be said, irony is a harsh task master.

Winny this really dirties your name. Not that I thought much of it except for boxer shorts and wine boxes.

  14. Latest news ,Winston is appalled at what is happening in Iran .But he is sillent on the invasion and genocide in Gazza and the west bank along with Venezuela .Its all good if The USA or Israel are murdering their own or others but If its Iran or China invading Taiwan its a war crime or genocide .I really can see no difference they are all lower than animals .Stupid old coot should stay in his lane .
