  1. “The trial only tested a very narrow slice of maths
She noted that the programme focused only on number (basic facts, number structure, rational number and proportional reasoning) ”

That actually sets students up nicely for the other areas. A lot of people are unaware that measuring a small slice of skills can be indicative of skills and preparedness in other areas, and the evolution of understanding, particularly in the sciences and engineering.

In any case the progress is a good start.

      1. I lecture engineering. Basic mathematics (and literacy skills) possessed at the beginning of the programme, which obviously does not cover the course content to be delivered, is a powerful predictor of success in future studies.

It’s the same with standardized aptitude and intelligence tests. They do have strong predictive value when it comes to life outcomes and success. The evidence for this is overwhelming, even if some do not like to admit it.

Testing someone in A can be a powerful predictor of B, even if B is not directly tested.

Understanding proportions and percentages in itself, is incredibly important, and if they master those concepts, one can predict that students will have an easier time getting to grips with other mathematical concepts.

        1. ummm – no – Stamford Wife is saying they have achieved B when tested for A. They passed Stage I Engineering having passed Stage I mathematics.

    1. Well, you obviously couldn’t parse the evidence and must have failed mathematics to make your bold claims.

So maybe cease opining on things beyond understanding.

You’re always boosting Stanford. Are you hoping for a job or a hand shandy?

  2. “Te Raranga Rangatira” a template shared around schools giving their support to the Treaty of Waitangi have numbered up to 1300 schools so far and there are more willing to sign on, this is real grass root movement, not some astroturf fake movement. Some of these schools are in Sleezemore electorate which would piss him off. Apparently, the architect of this template is a Lawyer Tania Waikato who said she’ll be putting her hat in the ring for the Greens if selected and she’ll make an excellent member for the left block clever, witty, articulate, wish her the best.

        1. Stop encouraging him regularly CG. We are doing a public service by letting him air his views before the gases expand and blow up as in Pike River. A sad thought. Let him be and help us with your analysis and ideas about what we might do in what remains of our real world if you can.

          1. Our real world is determined by choice not by facists, Greywarbler. Whilst the Bob’s of this world believe the world is rosy, then the world has a problem. Ignoring it does not make the problems go away. That may be your choice Greywarbler, however it is not mine. In regard to N.Z., record numbers have made their choice to move across the Tasman because they see no end in site with a Government hellbent on dividing a country into have’s and have nots. That should worry all.

          1. As I said, your beliefs not alternative facts double posting Boband they are the problem. Hears a hint for you because you can’t seem to see the full picture…transformation does not equal success as Standford has shown on multiple occasions.

    1. Totally agree Allan however there are those with very limited intellect who will never deal in facts, and their bias will mean they will make pathetic and immature statements such as “Erica continues to make excellent progress while her detractors scramble”. That is demonstrating their lack of understanding, whilst trying to immaturely detract from Erica’s inexperience and rogue agenda.

        1. Thank you for confirming my post Bob, you were like candy to a child, such is your immaturity.

        2. How come you have more than one icon and colour Bob1st, have you found a way to bob up everywhere? Yoiks.

          1. Perhaps I can be of assistance there Greywarbler, read my non de plume.

  3. 1300 schools that is a good number, but didn’t Stanford say some schools were being bullied into signing the petition and based on her poor research methodology to prove a point her tactics actually show she is a bully herself and likes to get her way by all means. Our PM being arrogant and as thick as two planks when it comes to diplomacy will ignore the number of schools challenging their new curriculum and carry on as usual.

  4. National fucked up our education system last time with their national standards and now they are doing it again, not good. It is going to take long time to clean up all their messes.
