Hottest year on record for Zealandia prompts call to action from climate scientists โ Climate Club
Aotearoa New Zealand has seen record high temperatures across many regions over the last week. This is not an isolated weather incident. In 2025 New Zealandโs overall combined land and sea temperatures were the hottest ever measured.
The data comes from a new report released by Dr Jim Salinger with Climate Club New Zealandโs Science Panel which considers temperature observations across Zealandia Te Riu-a-Mฤui.
The report highlights that 2025 recorded the highest average temperature in 151 years of continuous monitoring. All five of New Zealandโs hottest years have occurred since 2018.
โThese arenโt just numbers on a page,โ says Dr Salinger. โThis is the story of how our climate is changing, written in one of the longest and most reliable temperature datasets in the Southern Hemisphere. What weโre seeing is an acceleration โ the warming is speeding up, not slowing down.โ
This is the ABC off RNZโฆ

โฆno where do they talk about climate change.
This is the ABC off RNZ FFS!
The disconnect between news stories on the extreme weather events we are seeing and their connection with the global warming future we are locked into thanks to human pollution continuing the warm the planet beyond tipping points that once breached canโt return from โ is a chasm.
The reality vs our weaponised apathy.
The distance between what is actually happening in an age of consequences vs deliberate ignorance.
Human pollution since the steam age has spiralled global temperatures beyond points that the biosphere can come back from.
We are seeing the reality of that in real time.
In 1980, the time between billion dollar climate destruction events was 3 months.
Itโs now 18 days.
There is a point where the next destructive weather event strikes before you can rebuild from the last one.
We are meeting an Age of Consequences with a culture of wilful blindness.
These heatwaves are going to become the normal background of an ever warming planet, Climate Change is here and now, the ramifications of our denial only exacerbates the damage and the direction in which this Government is heading is farcical!
The total capture of the environmental agenda by Corporate Dairy, Mining, Property Developers and Big Pollution shows how willing National are to strangle off the common good for their donorโs interests.
The Methane deal locks us into catastrophic global warming.
I think there is a real danger here that the next wave of environmental activism stops being street based outrage and starts becoming cell group militant sabotaging of the infrastructure that enables this pollution.
The age of consequences is upon us and we deserve everything coming our way.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, soย if you value having an independent voice โ please donate here.

Watch for an exponential rise in red and yellow stickered homes. Then the rate of repair and replacement will not keep with the rate of increase.
Ok so that’s all not well and not good. But again, here is the big question: what are you climate warriors doing about it, beyond writing, tiktokking and megaphoning. Give us some concrete evidence of stuff done by Green Party members and climate warriors to lead the way. I want to hear about solar panels on houses, ditching your petrol cars, no more flying around the world (except Chloe in Biz Class), no more hyper consumerism, no more meat eating. Let’s hear it so we can learn and copy you.
They can’t do anything except bitch and moan about it, because NZ emits just 0.1% of global emissions and the planet all breath the same air (cutting CO2 here, even to zero, will not affect the local climate). China and Asia represent the majority of CO2 emissions, with India growing fast:

Well said Jonzie.
Many homes will become uneconomic to insure leaving many with the loss of their asset and no protection against the worsening weather.
Beyond the environmental impacts the human implications are huge.
