WAATEA NEWS COLUMN: Top 10 Worst MPs in 2025

I recently listed the Top 10 MPs who impressed me this year, and now is the Top 10 worst MPs, in no particular order.

David Seymour – ACT Party Leader – Pushing the Treaty Referendum Principles Bill that generates so much cultural friction that it borders on a low level race war is not what responsible politicians would ever attempt, yet David went there and proudly tells anyone who will listen that he will try and do it again if given half the chance. His Regulatory Standards Bill allow corporations to put their property rights above human rights in a way that actually dilutes democracy in favour of the rich. He’s like a Santa Claus that steals from poor children tongue to rich children.

Brooke Van Velden – ACT Party MP – Her desire to simply knee cap pay parity for all those mostly women workers is not only the greatest crime against feminism in 2025, but it’s just jaw droopingly cruel in the middle off a cost of living crisis.

Chris Luxon – National Party Leader + Prime Minister – His unbelievable weakness this year to allow Seymour and Winston to do what they liked highlights his spinelessness, but it was his message to parents of hungry children complaining about David Seymour’s terrible school lunches that really set a new low, he told them to go make a marmite sandwich. That’s the Prime Minister of New Zealand, telling poor parents to go make sandwiches if they don;’t like the slop David was forcing the to eat. How low have we fallen as a people when that is our Prime Minister?

Winston Peters – NZ First Leader – He just seemed to enjoy being cruel to Trans people, migrants, Migrant Green Party MPs and Palestinians, groups of people who don’t deserve extra pain or criticism. I’d call him a grumpy old man, but that would be unfair to grumpy old men.

Simon Court – ACT Party MP – Was so pro Israel this year, you actually wondered if he was the Israeli Ambassador rather than a NZ MP. He claims to be a free speech champion, but that ends the moment you criticise Israel’s war crimes.

Doc Ferris – Mฤori Party MP – His late night rant that pushed a Mฤori only rather than a Mฤori first argument over migrants helping Labour in the Tฤmaki Makaurau by-election – a by-election that the Maori Party actually won, was the first sign that something terribly wrong had happened inside te Pฤti Mฤori.

Mariameno Kapa-Kingi – Maori Party MP – Debbie and Rawiri deserved loyalty, not plotting.

Tama Potaka – National Party MP – Has been missing in action to push back on any of the most destructive anti-Mฤori and anti-Treaty from this Government. He’s as useless as your average appendix.

Casey Costello – NZ First MP – Who is she actually working for? The NZ people or Big Tobacco?

Shane Jones – NZ First MP – Who does he actually work for? The NZ people or the mining industry, fishing industry or Oil and Gas industry?

Merry Christmas and happy new year, 2026 is the election and things are about to get far more bumpy.

Enjoy the Summer, you will need the recharge!

  1. Spot on Martyn, but I would also have liked to see Judith Collins in that line-up. New Zealanders used to be a proud, fair-minded nation, but that appears to have gone out the window. Now we have a ‘knot of toads’, greedy, vain, self-entitled, self-serving, and so very smug. No offence meant against our amphibian toads! There are days when I’m ashamed of my fellow citizens and am pleased I’m not from settler stock. I truly hope it’s not too late to do a full circle and get back to being kind, caring and actually show some empathy towards those who are in a lesser position. Is that too much to ask for? For some of you, do take a long hard look in the mirror, you may be shocked at what you have become.
