Sad day for democracy as RSB passes second reading – Greens

Despite a resounding majority of submitters opposing the Regulatory Standards Bill, Luxonโ€™s Government has pushed it through secondreading.

โ€œNew Zealanders made it clear they donโ€™t want this zombie Frankenstein of the Treaty Principles Bill. Today Christopher Luxon has chosen to ignore them,โ€ says Green Party Co-leader, Chlรถe Swarbrick.

โ€œOur country has real problems we could be fixing, but instead the Government is stroking the ACT Partyโ€™s ego by reviving and pushing through their vanity project which has failed three times over the last twenty years.

โ€œThe law preaches โ€˜good law makingโ€™ while breaking its own rules. Itโ€™s been rejected by its own Ministry, health experts, the legal profession, environmental organisations and almost 99% of nearly 160,000 submitters.

โ€œThatโ€™s because it entrenches special treatment for those who own things over those who donโ€™t; over our collective wellbeing, over our environment and climate, and over our democracy.

โ€œNew Zealanders care about each other and the planet that we live on. This Bill is trying to entrench polar opposite โ€˜principlesโ€™ย  in how we make our laws moving forward. Thatโ€™s an affront to who we are as New Zealanders.

โ€œThe Greens will repeal this waste of time and money, and weโ€™ll deal with the real issues our country is facing. Weโ€™re proud to have the solutions to lower the cost of living and climate changing emissions while improving peopleโ€™s quality of life.

โ€œThe first step is making this a one term Government,โ€ says Chlรถe Swarbrick.
