Greens respond to Labour’s CGT announcement

“Labour’s watered down Capital Gains Tax announcement today falls far short of meeting the needs of New Zealanders,” says the Green Party Co-Leader and Finance Spokesperson Chlöe Swarbrick.

“Our country isn’t working for working people.

“Right now, the wealthiest pay half the effective tax rate of our nurses, teachers and firefighters. Labour’s announcement doesn’t even try to fix that.

“In a year, the richest family in this country can make more money in their sleep, without lifting a finger, than Labour’s proposed CGT would generate.

“That’s not only grossly unfair. It robs us of the resource necessary for the working healthcare and education and infrastructure that New Zealanders deserve.

“The tax debate in this country has been framed by silly soundbites and outright lies for decades. Meanwhile, regular New Zealanders have watched their cost of living soar, generating record profits for big businesses. It’s time for some honest politics.

“Our plan would see the wealthiest pay their fair share and ensure all New Zealanders had fully free GP visits, free dental care, free early childhood education, affordable renewable electricity and so much more,” says Chlöe Swarbrick.
