Wait – WTF?
Christopher Luxon gets rates relief after challenging luxury Waiheke property valuation
Christopher and Amanda Luxon’s private holiday home in one of New Zealand’s most exclusive neighbourhoods has been granted a devaluation and rates relief – at the request of its owners.
The luxury property at Onetangi Beach, on Waiheke Island, was valued at $10.5 million by Auckland Council in June, meaning it would have had a rates bill of just over $25,000 a year.
After an objection to the valuation was lodged, Auckland Council agreed to drop the value of the home by 33% to $7m, records show.
This will save the Luxons $8100 on their annual rates bill.
The Herald has tried twice in the past week to contact Luxon with questions. He saidthrough a spokesperson “we have no comment on the Prime Minister’s personal financial affairs”.
I’m sorry – WHAT?
Firstly, money bags here is rolling in cash, how can he use mechanisms available to generate rates relief when he’s shitting gold bullion and pissing crypto?
Mungo no understand.
Would anyone else get this kind of loving treatment?
He thinks he’s a King too.
He’s rich, he’s sorted.
Egalitarian NZ should be weeping.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

Yep, Luxon is one of the dumbest PMs ever. Not a political bone in his body.
Not only that…but he has now set a precendent whereby anyone can challenge a property valuation, down, or up, for percuniary gain.
Where is the media’s analysis on this….
Asking how the valuation initially came in at over $10 million and why it was reduced $3 million..?.
What were the different methodologies used in both the 1st
and 2nd valuation?
Will that now cause all property valuations in that area to be revised downwards by 30%?
The stupidity of Luxon to even go there with this only further highlights
his self indulgent greed ..
-Claiming EV discounts for buying Teslas for his wife and himself…the 2nd one being cancelled once he was caught out.
.- Claiming $50,000 a year for using
his own apartment when Govt
House was available.
Claiming taxpayer’s money for an electoral office building that he actually owns.
Selling several of his own ‘investment’ houses/ apartments ,making 100’s of thousands of tax free dollars off the back of an unregulated property market that had 10% to 20% increases in value
year on year and then lecturing
people on how they need to work and save harder off the back of a1%-2% wage rise per annum.
Hypocrisy, self indulgent, greed, double standards, imoral behaviour…it’s a huge story…where is the media?
Agree. The action is so typical of this greedy bitch. But why did Auckland council comply? Weird. It’s a holiday home too, in one of Aucklands richest suburbs.
Since I’ve not had any of my comments posted covering the last few days and I’ve had no explanations as to why I’m being ghosted I have nothing to write and can no longer regard this Blog as my home place.
@The Killer White T-Cell aka Countryboy
That’s a real shame, your polemics are most enjoyable and add substantial colour to this comments section. I for one will miss that if you are genuinely stepping away.
Yes me too. Often hilarious.
I think this will be the 17th time you have stormed off promising to never come back
Don’t be too tough on kwtc he is straightforward and comes from a section of society that has importance, and has a consistent message and some good ideas. Don’t cut him off at the knees or do a Tall Poppy prune on him. Perhaps just ask him for shorter rants eh. Or if long to be quoting his sources – good to know actual info rather than reckons. For instance where does it say that Australian banks in NZ are making/transferring large amounts say $580,000 per minute, hour, day? l’d like to know exactly. Just shorter please kwtc. We have the picture, fill in the latest details. I’ll have to crop myself as well, I know.
I don’t get all my comments posted either, start your own blog if you feel that everything you say is important or accept that Martyn gets the final day in how he wants any discussion to trend.
Look Killer, it happens to the best of us. When there is a blog on the distaste of Newstalk ZB and the likes of Heather du Plessis-Allan, I quite often won’t get my comment posted because I call her a child bride and Soper a sugar daddy.
I would be even happier when his dumb actions reduce his property value to zero and he ends up on the jobseeker list.
The I’m sorted Luxon song This is the life! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzN5Ng4_QI4&list=RDSzN5Ng4_QI4&start_radio=1
“This Is The Life”
This is the life, here’s where the livin’ is
This is the life, baby you’re there
This is the life, you’ve waited long enough
Girl you’ve arrived, breathe in that air
Wine and perfume, silver and candlelight
Children make way, I’m here to stay
Nothing but class, that’s how it’s gonna be
This is the life for me
House at the beach, dinners at ’21’
Head waiters smile when you walk in
Hand-tailored suits, shirts with your monogram
Feel of real silk next to your skin
Top of the heap, first cabin all the way
How sweet the song when you belong
Nothing but class, that’s how it’s gonna be
This is the life for me
This is the life
This is the life
This is the life
That’s Matt Monro’s life.
This is now. This is our life sorted – or some of us not-so-smarts.

Politically it’s incredibly dumb for Luxon to lodge this claim. If Jacinda interfered with a valuation of her property the media would be screaming “SCANDAL” and demanding she quit for political interference.
But also at fault is Auckland Council for accepting this. I doubt it would approve if half of Mangere were demanding their property values be cut by 33% so they get a big rates cut.
The whole saga reeks of double standards.
First move the bright line test so I can not pay tax then devalue so I pay less rates .Can the council claw back the missed rates when he sells to an over seas parasite for 15 million next year .Where is our capital gains tax ?
Melon head has done well here (for his sorted self of course, no one else) while many NZers shop very cautiously just to buy basic items.
What the hell was Auck. Council thinking-a 33% revaluation for Mr Suxon!
Our ‘puffed up’, greedy, selfish PM has sadly found his ‘bach’ is being rated on a higher selling price than he anticipates he would get on the market. The irony of this is he has now opened a ‘huge can of worms’ as many, many Aucklanders would know they are in the exact same position, albeit with more modest ‘homes’. I would also hazard a guess that Luxon wouldn’t even have gone down that thought process, since it is all about ME ME ME! So Wayne Brown, in all fairness, you better get ready to reassess ALL our Auckland rates to line up with the current property values. This would bring some relief to many in need. I also bet that should Luxon put his Waiheke property on the market, it would be for around its $10.5m value! Clearly our PM lacks moral fortitude and a sense of fair play.
This type of behavior and the message it sends does little for his miserable reputation and just confirms what many including those on strike yesterday how out of touch and elitist this regime is.
Of course he deserves rates relief as we wouldn’t want him squeezed.
Um but why not publish? Nobody in their right mind would take offence.
I get the impression Luxon deems himself as Entitled to grab as much money as possible to line his OWN pockets.
Remember earlier last year he believed he was Entitled to claim $52,000 on Accommodation for his mortgage free Wellington apartment(which I believe he later sold and paid NO Sales Tax on that sale) whilst in Wellington which was about 3 nights a week. He deemed himself Entitled to hire two helicopters to fly Albo and him up a mountain for a Pavlova Photo Opportunity.
I do now wonder if he has also had rates cuts on that property in Auckland that is his electoral office?
He is without Morals or Ethics. So I guess we should never be surprised this Bottom Feeder(Luxon)is only in the job as an often Missing in Action part-time prime minister for what he can get for himself financially. He is a very Shallow creature.
It’s not fair that you are being so critical of our PM, when he is only trying to do his best. He is no where near as rich and sorted as Elon. So TDB should consider starting a gofundme for our PM, to help him get back on his feet again. Must be tough trying to deny redress to victims of abuse in state care who have broken the law, considering that sexually abusing and electrocuting and giving painful injections to children, is all kind of against the law as well. Not what you want the state to be getting up to, and may still be getting up to for all we know. Has Chris even met any of the Lake Alice victims? We should make empathy one of his kpi’s.
This is an example of why Luxon and family are the real bottom feeders. They take advantage of every chance to push and bully and beg to have an exception made so that they will be advantaged, because otherwise ‘it’s not fair’. (Snivelling ‘Rump’s favourite phrase…It’s not Fair!)
I don’t think the council would look at my questions about my rates because I am not important.
Grasping, greedy, pompous and a bottom feeder extraordinaire.
He seems to spend an awful lot of time, paid for by us, looking into ways he can save a dollar or squeeze some personal concession from someone. It would be good if he was that diligent on our behalf, seeing he’s supposed to be the PM.
He needs to be reminded that our rates pay for a lot of public services and he uses them just as much as the rest of us. The size of the rebate is telling. You might hope for a couple of thousand off but not over 8k.? Providing public services on an island is trickier than on the mainland too.
Of course, the place will miraculously again be valued at over 10 million when he decides to sell it.
The funny thing is, he doesn’t realise how this goes down like a lead balloon with the electorate. He’s just not smart at all. He’s looking more and more like bumbling Captain Pugwash, every day.
Rates relief FFS. Luxon’s tax relief pales in comparison to the tax relief he hands out to Aussie and Singaporean property investors.

There’s money for everyone, including himself, but not for normal, everyday people who pay his salary. They are freaks, these people. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s touched the council for rates relief on all his properties. It’s a scam.
Wow joseph and the simplicity of the foreign investor scam is mind-blowing. Be great to see that video used alongside the mega strike video over and over again 3 months out from next year’s election.
I despair. Someone owning a second property worth $10m (forget the $7m debacle for the moment) is doing so because the implicit return they make tax free is worth more to them than having $10m in the bank generating an actual return. Otherwise they wouldn’t buy a second home. So lets tax their $10m equity to reflect what they could have earned on a safe bank deposit. At a term deposit rate of 4%, the $10m would be deemed to generate $400,000 interest. Taxed at 39% as income, this is $156,000 or $78,000 extra tax each for a couple. That would sort them!
They can’t buy class even with that kind of money.
But don’t despair. At least the Luxon family will be able to afford new pyjamas for their Christmas photo.
My house might sell for $350k on a real good day and I pay $4800 in rates a year so how come a ten million house pays bugger all more ?no wonder the wealthy are screaming about us bottom feeders getting on the property ladder .
Never mind a rated cap lets have a RATES STRIKE till we all get a 33% reduction .
