Office of the Speaker of the NZ House of Representatives
Rt Hon Gerry Brownlee
A cross-party delegation of members of Parliament will attend the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland from Sunday 19 – Thursday 23 October.
They will meet and discuss significant geo-political issues and developments with fellow parliamentarians from around the world. Over 120 parliaments will attend the Assembly.
The New Zealand delegation will be led by the Chairperson of the New Zealand IPU Group, Stuart Smith MP, accompanied by Tangi Utikere MP, Kahurangi Carter MP, and Hon Rachel Brooking MP.
The members will join discussions in forums and committees, including women parliamentarians, peace and international security, sustainable development, and democracy and human rights. They will also take part in the conference debate: “Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis”.
Events from the Assembly will be live streamed on the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) YouTube channel.
Delegation members will briefly visit Warsaw, Poland, reciprocating a visit by Polish Parliamentarians in November 2024, and will also attend the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Slovenia.
Note:
Inter-Parliamentary Relations are a way for members of New Zealand’s Parliament to keep Parliament relevant, effective, and innovative. Dialogue between members of different parliaments increases mutual understanding between countries, develops best practice, and ensures New Zealand is playing an active part in the international community. Members’ active participation in inter-parliamentary activities improves their knowledge and insights as legislators, which in turn improves parliamentary scrutiny of Government.
