Many of New Zealand’s highest-profile broadcasters – including John Campbell and Paddy Gower – are likely to be considered by RNZ as candidates to take over from Corin Dann as Morning Report co-host.
Corin has been the decent bugger and fallen upon his sword to allow RNZ the pretence of change to at least look like they are responding to the avalanche of criticism coming their way.
I liked Corin, I think he asks very straight bat questions, just like Jack Tame, and is a credit to Fourth Estate journalism.
With him gone, RNZ needs a big name to take it to ZB.
The obvious candidate is John Campbell.
John is the best journalist/broadcaster this country has.
He has the intelligence, wit and humbleness to take RNZ Morning Report and turn it into an ‘agenda setting’ level of broadcasting.
Most importantly, John has commercial TV experience and that is ultimately what is lacking at RNZ.
Let me explain.
What is the real difference between ZB and RNZ?
The bloody adverts.
ZB is jam packed full of adverts pimping snake oil bullshit at full volume every 7 bloody minutes. Those who are used to RNZ will NEVER transfer to that kind of mawkish commercialisation, but what those tiny advert breaks where a radio show breaks out forces the NZME host to do is cut straight to the point.
RNZ gets attacked for its lack of peace because they have the luxury to not have advert breaks and that privilege breeds a complacency.
John has worked 7pm Current Affairs, he knows you have to cut to the point now because that’s his DNA.
Putting him in Morning Report would generate a new internal pace.
RNZ won’t lose more listeners to ZB because the adverts are toxic, but gaining John would be a true alternative to Mike Hosking.
Why would you listen to Ryan Bridge in the morning when you had John Campbell as an option?
IF RNZ wants to actually compete and step up they will appoint John Campbell.
If they want to fail they will appoint someone else.

Many of us are sick to death of the CR&P being fed to us by our ‘right biased’ media incl. the insidious ZB. They will do anything to keep the real issues/truth from us, so thank-you, Martyn, for being our only source of reality. One or two Journo’s are brave enough to tell more, but the majority are muzzled. It doesn’t auger well for a rounded, healthy society. I fear for a world that is becoming more and more governed by greed, ignorance and power. Wake up the stupid among you – it’s not all about YOU, what about your progeny, don’t they deserve better from you? So let’s get the best broadcasters into the high profile jobs so we are all fully informed of the facts, not the current filtered gibberish.
Does John C want the job? If so he is the one for sure. They would be fools not to. Why did Corin have to leave?
There’re all captured Martyn…when Dann was at TVNZ the commercial bias was evident…we can’t rock the boat or we will get the arse…this carried on thru to RNZ…a safe pair of hands that won’t frighten the horses.
Heaven forbid we don’t get Gower as he is in the same mould & would tow the party line.
Campbell would be good but the powers that be would want him muzzled (Jonkee)….so the selection would have to go all the way to the top with some sound editorial backing of who ever gets it.
I heard Dann & Espiner talking about unions the other day, both said that they had not much involvement with them in their working lives which is evident in that they both made rather disparaging remarks about the ethos of unions & the fabric of society that we used to have in this country…unions bad/individualism good….it’s all about me not we!

Agreed to bring John Campbell in for Corin but… that would probably be the last nail in the coffin of RNZ when Luxon announces pre-2026 election, as he said he would, that RNZ is on the list of state assets he would sell.
A Trumpian tactic if ever there was one. But a very likely one. And wouldn’t Winston gloat!
John Campbell is an overpaid has-been.
RNZ needs someone new and hungry.
Someone that isn’t afraid to ask the hard questions.
