Media Insider: Independent report into TVNZ news – public broadcaster releases a summary of impartiality and balance findings

A TVNZ-commissioned review of TVNZ’s news coverage has identified only “minor” issues – and “no evidence of systemic bias or lack of impartiality in 1News’ reporting”, according to a TVNZ summary of the report.

However, publicly owned TVNZ is refusing to release the actual report either routinely or under the Official Information Act – partly, it says, to protect the privacy of people named in it.

“The review includes comment on specific TVNZ employees,” according to a response from TVNZ last night.

TVNZ commissioned the independent review of its news – checking for balance and bias – following Government pressure on the state broadcaster to improve its trust levels.

Of course TVNZ is biased, but not in the way you think.

It isn’t Left wing at all  (Jason Walls is ZBs former political pimp FFS) it’s biased in its middle class banality.

TVNZ has been depoliticised so much so that politics has actually been removed and erased from TVNZ altogether.

The only analysis is provided by John Campbell when he’s allowed to provide it, but with no actual class analysis of the economic landscape, TVNZ is merely a middle class self help lounge room that is present and mindful.

It’s the banality of TVNZ that undermines its role as the Fourth Estate, they don’t see their job as challenging then powerful, their job is ensuring the comfort of the powerful.

Seven Sharp is possibly the greatest brain injury to Journalism ever created.

TVNZ isn’t biased, it’s irrelevant.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. The only reliable media we have in AO/NZ is right here. The great old The Daily Blog.
Everything else is neoliberal, like our politics.

    • Yep…Martyn Bradbury is so well researched , ‘on point’, and unafraid to call a spade a spade, that it glaringly makes msm journalism look like amateur hour!

  2. That it’s not political, and middle class, should not be a criticism. I think there is a place for Seven Sharp’s style of broadcasting. hnTV does’nt have to be all about politics.

  3. As far as I am concerned viewers get “trump-like rubbish” from TVNZ every night. They ignore the REAL NZ issues even when they are clearly destroying our country and its people. They get away with this because they believe we won’t notice. So yes, they are totally biased towards this ghastly, corrupt CoC and are treating their viewers with utter disrespect. I don’t watch TVNZ news any more. Your site is my news’ bible. Please keep bringing it on. Those who can’t comprehend this needn’t log on to your site and can continue living with their heads in the sand.

  4. “I think there is a place for Seven Sharp’s style of broadcasting”. Of course. And, yes, it doesn’t need to be all about politics. But let’s recognize Seven Sharp for what it is: the TV version of the Woman’s Weekly. Real-life stories, food, lifestyle, home & entertaining, feel good human interest, the mandatory animal story. Better off in the breakfast spot.
