Open slathered approach to oil and gas exploration – Climate Justice Taranaki

Climate Justice Taranaki is strongly opposed to the government’s reopening of Aotearoa NZ to oil and gas exploration.

“According to the International Court of Justice, granting new fossil fuel exploration licenses and subsidies is a clear abrogation of State responsibility to protect the climate system and other parts of the environment from anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.

It is delusional to think that such an open slathered approach to oil and gas exploration would reinstate industry confidence or energy security.

Fossil fuel is a finite resource. It is running out, so is our carbon budget if we want to have a livable planet for our children. That is why investor interest has been dwindling.

A responsible government would conserve what’s left and invest strongly in renewable local and community energy development instead.

Communities across the motu are ready to resist the government’s drilling and mining push while working together for a sustainable and restorative future,” said Catherine Cheung of Climate Justice Taranaki.
