Our long struggle for justice against Islandsbanki continued in a Reykjavik courtroom on September 2, 2025 and we have some incredible news to share about our progress behind the scenes. After a successful hearing in June, our team, alongside WikiLeaks’ Icelandic lawyers, was back in court. This time the bank was finally compelled to provide a witness.
The Bank Doesn’t know, Can’t remember
The bank’s witness, a young lawyer, appeared unprepared for many specific lines of inquiry. When questioned about their efforts to engage with us before freezing our accounts and their compliance with banking regulations, the witness responded at least eight times with either, “I can’t remember” or “I don’t know.” This included a confession of lacking knowledge of EU banking laws.
Our lawyer, Supreme Court Attorney Sveinn Andri Sveinsson, commented on this tactic:
“It is typical in court cases, and often used, to give statements of ‘I don’t know’ and ‘I don’t remember’ to avoid answering important or difficult questions. I hope the judge will see through the lack of answers and interpret it to Islandsbanki’s disadvantage.”
Our founder, Suzie Dawson, reflected on why we took this step:
“Suing the bank was a last resort but is an important step to show our community of thousands of small donors and supporters that, regardless of outcome, when wronged by a powerful force, we are prepared and willing to stand up for the public good and the public interest, in Iceland and beyond.”
Our Brand Ambassador, John Kiriakou, who was present in court, summed it up:
“I think it could not have gone better for Talk Liberation… the witness was unable to even answer some of the most basic questions.”
