“I want to respond to Tākuta Ferris and the hurtful things he’s saying and why being Māori is more than just an identity.
My entire political career has been about calling on Māori and Pakeha and everyone else who calls NZ home, to work together for the common good.
The Treaty is a relationship, and I believe that working together is the best way to build the mana of that relationship in a way that respects the dignity and well being of all those participating.
What Tākuta is arguing for however in his hurtful comments attacking migrant Kiwis and Pakeha for volunteering in our by-election campaign flies in the face of those values.
I understand what he is saying in terms of Maori being lost and just being seen as another ethnic group that’s something I have argued against my entire life.
However, ethnic groups giving a bit of time and support to a Maori seat campaign is not some ethnic takeover of the Maori seats or insult to our whakapapa! It was our brothers and sisters from Pacifica , Asia and around the world giving their tautoko no more and no less and Docs views are just nonsense and in fact racist.
To infer that Peeni Henare’s identity as a Māori, Georgie Dansey’s identity or even my identity are somehow lesser because we have failed Doc Ferris’ ‘authentic Māori test’ is beyond offensive.
Our identity as Māori, our identity as Kiwis are not shaped by who we will exclude! It is shaped by everyone we include!
Your identity as a Māori is not reduced because you work with everyone in our community to build bridges between other communities, it is strengthened by that engagement!.
All Tākuta has managed to do is hand our very worst political extremists on the Right the attack lines they need to paint Te Pati Māori as too extremist to ever work with the Labour Party to kick this Government out.
I’m in Labour because I believe in working together, you are not a lesser Māori for wanting that either.
Let this moment be what brings you off the fence to join Labour.
We are far more powerful together than separately.
This is now a matter for Te Pati Māori leadership to fix , hopefully that can happen soon.”
If –
If – Willie Jackson’s ‘calling on Māori and Pakeha and everyone else who calls NZ home, to work together for the common good,’ is heeded.
If – ‘this is now a matter for Te Pati Māori leadership to fix’
If – that can happen soon
If – Willie Jackson sticks to his guns in calling on Māori and Pakeha and everyone else who calls NZ home, to work together for the common good.
If – The Labour Party Maori caucus back Willie Jackson
Then – the Labour Party leadership and Chris Hipkins may agree to work with TPM to get this government out.
I heard Te Ururoa Flavell talking today about it. It’d be interesting to see him and John Tamihere debate the issue, because they certainly are not in agreement.
Thank you for reposting this. It’s exactly what I mean. We cannot waste time or energy correcting our allies.
If individuals cannot use some discretion with their allies and save their slings and arrows for the other side, we’ll get nowhere.
Ferris’ complaints are a distraction from the real battle. If he can’t accept that, perhaps he’s in the wrong job.
Labour has enough decisions to make without debating what their potential allies are saying. They should all be in agreement on the basics, if they want to be in govt.
Not a credible call, coming from someone who has failed to challenge the filthy neoliberal Chris Hipkins.
Yes NZ is broken and it was broken by the National coalition when they introduce this type of corruption…

Add in the appalling pay equity policy by Van Velden and we wonder why our best and brightest are leaving for countries that aren’t broken.
