MEDIAWATCH: The Standard goes there – why a Labour/NZF Government would be a disaster

You know shit just got real when The Standard are calling on Labour to work with NZF…

So, New Zealand First Then?

…I know, I know, I know – who the fuck reads The Standard anymore – (I’m pretty sure TDB is like 20 times their readership – they are the Dr Bryce Edwards of ‘no one gives a shit’ and the Chris Trotter of ‘shoot me now’) , but The Standard manages to sum up better than any other political bog in NZ the incrementalism of Labour and are channeling the middle class fears of the political drama of working with a Māori Party more focused on sticking it to Cracker than actually doing anything close to resembling actual policy.

Don’t get me wrong, we all want to stick it to Cracker, but if that’s all you’ve got, it’s a tad limiting.

Personally, a Labour/Green/MP Government is the only promise of gaining anything close to a progressive Government while a NZF/Green/Labour Government would be a spineless nothing.

The faction inside Labour who want to cut a deal with NZF because they fear the Māori Party are too radical would hopelessly compromise the Left in a way that we could never recover from if Labour are reliant on NZF.

NZF are no longer a rational political player, they are hopelessly compromised via donors interests to focus on the common good and their agents are fucking radioactive.

Take Toxic NZF anti-Trans Hate Troll Rys Williams…

Businessman behind toxic online Benjamin Doyle campaign

The anonymous online account that helped spark a political firestorm over Green MP Benjamin Doyle’s past Instagram posts is run by a businessman who is a former NZ First member, The Post can reveal.

…take Toxic NZF ant-vaccine staffer Jaap Knegtmans…

Globalists, ‘clot shots’ and the ‘evil witch’: How a conspiracy poster landed a job at the heart of government

A NZ First staffer who cheered on the Parliament occupation is still posting conspiracy theories and far-right content while working in the office of Winston Peters.

…Williams and Knegtmans are feral human being prepared to stoop to any tactic to advance their demented agendas, how could any Labour Party MP seriously consider a deal with NZF when lunatics as toxic as these two are on NZF side?

It is time for the Labour Factions to acknowledge there can be no deal with what NZF has turned into, a conspiracy swamp driven by the worst and most hateful elements of social media.

Those inside this Labour faction risk destroying everything Labour has ever stood for if they attempt to cut a deal with NZF after the election to sideline the Greens and the Māori Party.

Look, are the Māori Party insufferable and play up constantly to the political theatre without actually doing any of the mahi?

Sure, but  you can’t pretend that they are somehow worse than the genuine hate that NZF are trafficking in.

There can be no deal between Labour and NZF, no matter what The Standard says.

  1. More corrupt ex MPs lining up to join NZ First. Hipango who spent electorate allowance on TV for her house and Nash who gave confidential cabinet information to his business mates.
Hipango is amazing, calls herself a Maori, stood in a Maori electorate and now joins a racist anti Maori party. Go figure. Like we need any of these people near government.

    • She’s all about herself, so a perfect fit for NZ First. And Nash will hitch his wagon to whoever lets him get away with disregarding the rules whenever he feels like it. The problem is the average pleb looks at NZ First and sees only wily Winston and sanctimonious Shane — they don’t bother to dig around behind the curtain and gasp in horror at the sordid menagerie of cookers, nutjobs, self-interested grifters and frothing loons. For those who haven’t figured it out yet, Winston will court whoever is most likely to get his aged backside back on the government benches. He doesn’t seem terribly bothered by trivial inconveniences like some of his supporters being dangerously insane.

  2. I absolutely agree – a deal with NZF is a deal with the devil. Imagine having Jones regularly in your face pontificating his endless BS! From the RNZ article this morning, “Jones talks up power mill plan…….”, it looks like NZF could be slowing repositioning themselves to fit into a different approach. My family and I will not vote for anything that includes NZF – they are a bunch of toxic riff raff with no moral fibre. Those in Labour who support this need to look at their motives and levels of racism! I don’t regard Peters and Jones as “real Maoris”. Surely Labour party members can’t be that stupid! The main ingredients for a coalition between Left parties are sound, funded policies, compromise and respect.

    • An NZF Labour coalition is not a serious proposition. The point of The Standard floating this idea, is so as not to form a viable coalition that could get rid of this government.
Labour would rather we suffer another three years of this appalling government than work with the Greens and Te Pati Maori to get rid of them.
The Labour party would rather total control the losing side than share control of the winning side.

  3. It seems that the entrenched Labour base are just as capable as the Nats at adopting stupid ideas.

And Labour itself seems oblivious to the improvement in the polling of “leftists” such as Mandani and Newsom when they show some spine, stand up for their values and punch back at the bullies. Who is in charge of Labour s comms? A jellyfish?

  4. All this talk by Labour’s political poodle The Standard about making an accomodations with NZF to keep the Greens and Te Pati Maori out of government, is completely unrealisable.

But it is hiding something even worse, that Labour intends to throw the election rather than come to an agreement with Te Pati Maori and the Greens to get this government out.

  5. No one writes at The Standard on behalf of The Standard.

The facilitator of the blog can impersonate a Grand Inquisitor, but makes no such claim.

Those who write posts there disagree with each other in the comments section.

Sure there is the Labour-NZF coalition faction.

But I doubt they want to be walked all over like National is by both ACT and NZF.

John Key managed over his partners, Seymour and Peters see a walk of fame for their feet.

    • The Standard is a place where those too cowardly to write under their real name go to anonymously blog their consequently worthless reckons.

No one writes at The Standard on behalf of The Standard…..

Well that’s demonstrably not true. The Standard often puts out editorial statements not attributed to any of their anonymous stable of authors, under the title, ‘Written By notices and features’.

Like all editorials ‘Notices and Features; speaks for the outfit that publishes them. in this case The Standard.

Apart from that, like most media outlets and publications The Standard has an editorial line. As Lynn Prentice revealed to me in an email exchange, the editorial line of The Standard at this time, is that there is no genocide in Gaza, not until the ICJ says there is. This position is the same as the Labour party’s stated ‘position’, and indeed the same as your position. With the addition, (correct me if I am wrong SPC), that you also claim that it is not a genocide because the IDF issue warnings to people to get out. (Obviously anyone who remains after the IDF issue their warning is fair game for the IDF to slaughter.) You wrote that these warnings are “incompatible: with genocide. I disagreed. I provided you the testimonies of two Jewish Holocaust survivors whose families were warned to leave Europe, who related what happened to their extended family members who didn’t or couldn’t heed the Nazis’ warning.
For daring to challenge your genocide denial I was banned. That action alone is a clear example of the editorial line of The Standard regarding the genocide in Gaza.

The Standard has a vetted stable of anonymous authors which hides their affiliation, but no doubt they are all chosen to fit with The Standard’s editorial line, therefore they all speak on behalf of The Standard.

      • P.S.
….. no doubt they are all chosen to fit with The Standard’s editorial line, therefore they all speak on behalf of The Standard.

To which I might add, when anonymous Standard author, Advantage writes that Labour needs NZF to form a government despite the Greens party polling ahead of NZF, you can be assured that he is talking for The Standard.
Not until The Standard publishes a post calling for Chris Hipkins to sit in a room with the leaders of the Green Party and Te Pati Maori to work out a plan to get rid of this government, will I be convinced that Advantage wasn’t speaking on behalf of the Labour Party’s poodle.

  6. At least MickeySavage shows he has a brain. The overhang from the right and the dirty deal of Epsom needs to be countered and now we have it.

  7. NZF’s usual approach to coalition-building is through detailed coalition agreements with lengthy negotiations. I think these agreements make larger parties vulnerable by having to support policy positions that don’t have wide popular support. NZF has shifted over the years from a socially conservative, economically nationalist party to a home for people with opinions on the edge of derangement, and the economic nationalism has decayed into what looks like corruption. That just makes the problem worse.

So, if the numbers require it, Labour should go no further than asking NZF for confidence and supply, and accept that there will be some policy that they will have to park on the shelf because they can’t get the support needed in the House. Peters will likely reject that and go to Luxon again because he knows Luxon is weak. In the end, that may be the price Labour has to pay for having principles. The dilemma is solved only by getting the numbers on the night to sideline NZF.

    • One side or the other must be able to form a government with NZ First’s support, but Winston may be regretting being part of the CoC, albeit that he had no choice at the time. So getting a C&S agreement from him next time round may be easier. But then again, if Luxon decided to retire and Willis was ushered out of the finance job, going with the CoC may well seem more attractive.

  8. From what I remember every time Labour entered government with NZ First it ended badly and the sentiment was never again so I find it surprising that some are considering the idea again. It’s probably fair to say that about 90% of the country would not care if NZF disappeared so the last thing any sensible labour party should do is imply that they are still relevant.

  9. My reckon, NZ First gets heaps of voter support from the provinces due to the provincial growth fund. There is nothing stopping Labour from taking that support off NZFirst.

A coherent economic plan (not just a cgt redistribution plan) with competent ministers to implement it could be supported by tradies, by blokes, provincial townsfolk and nzfirsters, who want economic development + a fair go.

    ___________

Even the NZFirst ‘freedomites’ could be enticed back with Labour policy saying no to congestion charging surveillance capitalism, no to central bank digital money surveillance/social credit scoring mechanisms and have a law ready to go to prohibit debanking.

Found a card in a local cafe advertising https://www.cashiscool.co.nz (a voices for freedom front for collecting email addresses)

    https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2025/09/03/guest-blog-talk-liberation-making-headlines-are-you-following-the-badbanki-case/

    • Certainly an interesting idea. But I can’t see how the tax cuts would work particularly for business. Given the dishonesty of Politicians in general it will undoubtedly be smoke and mirrors and the average Taxpayers will finish up worse off. However I can already hear supporters of the idea saying that the benefits will be obtained in 30 or 40 years time. To bad the world will be fucked by then because Peters an Jones don’t think climate change is a thing and have blatant disrespect for ecology and Luxons bottom feeders.

  10. My path is pretty common.. started out Greens (1st ever vote) then Labour, now centre right. For the first time ever I am contemplating NZFirst.. they are pro jobs, pro mining etc although I’m worried about nash’s forestry mates.

  11. Short memories from some labour folk then .Remember when they were in government with the first Jacinda government ?the old coot put the hand brake on everything that needed to be done .Why would you be as desperate as Luxon and go into coalition with a bunch of feral rif raf .Just look at the two recent has beens that have turned up .Both corrupt as hell so they will fit in well getting back handers from the doners .

  12. The Labour Party turn swallowing dead rats into an art form

    Tomato sauce anyone?

…..Ardern swallowed the NZF dead rat no problem, so prepare to pass the tomato sauce.

…..The question with MMP is how many dead rats are acceptable to enable power to do a limited good.

…..I agree with your point. Add sauce to the dead rat and knife and fork it.

    Yuk!

    • I guess the question for The Standard and the Labour Party is, can we force this dead rat down our members’ throats?

  13. The news today seems to be NZF will be appealing to common sense.

“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”
    ― George Carlin

  14. Support for the genocide in Gaza is a right wing thing.
Denial of the genocide in Gaza is a liberal thing.

Support for the genocide in Gaza is a New Zealand First thing.
Denial of the genocide in Gaza is a Labour Party thing.

Supporting the genocide and denying the genocide is not too big a difference.

Yeah, I can see the attraction of a hook up between the two.

  15. …. – why a Labour/NZF Government would be a disaster
By Martyn Bradbury -September 7, 2025311243

I really don’t think that this is a serious proposition, but if it was –

A Labour NZF governement would be a disaster for our independent foreign policy

A Labour NZF governement would be a disaster for our environment

A Labour NZF governement would be a disaster for Maori

  16. I wonder if the Labour party will keep flogging this dead donkey, right up until election day. And then blame the voters when they lose the election.

  17. “…who the fuck reads The Standard anymore – (I’m pretty sure TDB is like 20 times their readership” Martyn Bradbury

I don’t know the figures, but I have noticed a decline in their posts and their discussion in their Open Mike.

The Labour party’s other foray into social media was Red Alert. Labour MPs aired their views openly on Red Alert under their own names.
Though The Standard authors, apart from occasional guest posts, are anonymous, The Standard most likely will go the same way as the Red Alert, And for the same reasons.

The Labour party leadership didn’t like their MPs openly debating the topics of the day with the public, and the public were appalled at the paucity of the level of debate and at how conservative Labour MPs were.

I believe the genocide in Gaza has the power, as it has in the UK and the US, to reshape the political landscape.

The Standard have nailed genocide denial to their mast. As Owen Jones has remarked careers and reputations will be ruined by this.
