Peeni is right, the Gang Patch Ban is a right wing virtue signal

How dare the Political Right smear Peeni for having the temerity to point out how useless their Gang Patch Ban virtue signal is.

Labour candidate Peeni Henare stands by gang-patch law repeal claim

Labour’s Tāmaki Makaurau candidate stands by saying he’d repeal the gang patch law at an event on Wednesday night, despite the party’s deputy leader insisting he was “mistaken”.

Peeni Henare told RNZ he was asked his personal view on the issue, which was informed by his whānau experience, and understood that differed from his party’s view.

Personally I think Peeni standing up against stupid anti-Māori laws like the Gang Patch Ban will help him in the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election.

It’s outrageous that a right wing virtue signal like Gang Patch Bans can be allowed to stand unchallenged.

  1. As a big fan of crime of all kinds, I’m sure David Seymour will disagree. Not having to fight other members of other gangs over the patch will allow criminal entrepreneurs to get on with pushing drugs and perhaps even Seymour’s highest value, trafficking young boys and girls for sex.

  2. “snatch the patch” should have been opposed by more people-it impinged on citizen’s freedom of association, expression and assembly.

Who cares, it is just scary gang members…until Brooke Van Velden bans union insignia at work places and the state forces come for you for supporting a Palestine rally-then people might wake up a bit.

    • You can see the bigger picture, unfortunately this government and it’s supporters are more interested in punishment than solving problems.

  3. These gang patches and the consequence to the social fabric towards Maori communities has a real detrimental effect. Maori males that affiliate with gangs have at least 1 or more relatives or friends that are gang members. Gangs commit the most serious crimes in our society and individuals within those gangs (depending)are majority of Maori decent. IMO and from what I’ve experienced having my own family in gangs and the negative effects being indoctrinated turns our young Maori men into violent, individuals even disrespecting their elders which comes from being associated with gangs.

Please continue the band on patches leave it illegal to wear as these gang members and their attire have visual negative impact besides committing serious crimes against their own communities which majority just happens to be of Maori decent.

    • Did a patch king hit you? Or was there a gang member (confirmed to be more of them than ever before) involved in the process?

      • Nah bro I just know through experience and the negative effects gangs have on our communities. A cousin of mine was murdered by the very gang he once belong too. Maori communities are already marginalized and suffer the effects of colonialism where they end up committing crimes inflicting serious harm against their own people. Removing the patch visibility from the equation can only help our vulnerable communities.

Remember Maori commit more crimes against Maori and gangs play an integral part of that victimization

    • Thanks for your valid contribution, while personally I think that it is a right wing virtue signal as Martyn describes it I also recognise the gangs are an issue however it is going to take major changes to make us the sort of decent society that reduces the attraction of gangs to people who feel that they are missing out and this government is going in the opposite direction.

  4. Well I am very cross that Labour are not going to repeal this disgusting law anyone go around advertising all those big international companies and what is more they think they are cool by advertising them.

    • You should learn English comprehension instead of making false claims about what Labour will do. Peeni having an opinion doesn’t make it Labour party policy no matter how often you repeat your lie.

  5. The worst gangs are the ones we can’t see bringing in drugs to our country through the pacific islands.

  6. Martyn, you quote the figures that 80 to 90% of gang members were abused in state care.
That means all of the gang members in state care were abused, if not then 100% or thereabouts of gang members have been in state care.
If so, there has been a lot of social issues to make state care a breeding ground for gangs going back the decades.
Personally I don’t like gangs as they peddle misery and death

  7. Recently I read and still reread Jacinda Arderns’ book A Different Kind of Power.

On part dealt with the Mosque Massacres and the response afterwards.

She went to Hagley College as a Crisis Centre had been set up to deal with the victims and their loved ones. And it is probably there that she saw on top of the tragedy that happened on 15th March 2019 the Uniting of so many people of different belief system and cultures

In the hall of Hagley College she saw Gang Members standing around the perimeter in a self-appointed Protection of those inside the hall to ensure They , the people, Remained Safe and not open to further attack in such a fragile time of their lives.

To me that is something that whilst they, the patched gang members in this country are demeaned for because it is publicised MOST crime/domestic crime/ Murders and violent crimes are Gang related I think maybe it’s time we all learnt as to what We can All Learn From What has happened.

At a time of Great Sadness Patched Gang Members went to the Community of Christchurch to protect those who at a time of great loss felt Vulnerable. It is likely many of those suffering came to NZ from a country where there was a loss of loss of loved ones and dignity as well as being respected for their Belief Systems. They had hoped for a New Beginning. Those Patched gang members showed Humanity and Caring. Their actions Showed a Kindness which is something a political party like National wouldn’t be able to Comprehend.

Some may think my thoughts are way too “Out There” but maybe instead of Denigrating and trying to dehumanise the Gangs it could be well time we actually looked at Life Through Their Eyes.

But then I am JUST ME i.e a simple Pakeha

  8. Luxflake and crew proudly wear their gang patches, blue business suits. They are a far more dangerous proposition.

  9. How much fuss would be made about the ban if the gangs were predominantly white people rather than brown
